@Joan Ronhockit's really about the story from the book Exodus that came out in 1958, by Leon Uris then made into a movie in 1960 by, I think Otto Preminger. The first lines of the song are relentlessly hunting and vivid. But I believe it was written for the movie~ won both Oscar and Grammy~it was about Israelis from all over Europe and other areas who returned to Israel in 1948 to reclaim, their land, their country. That's what the book is about, rather like the movie Titanic from 1996 tells a true story with representative characters.

I have heard this song since I was a young child, my mother used to sit at my great grandmothers piano and play it at least once a week and it was one of the first full length songs I ever learned to play. Though it wasn't until my teens that I saw the movie that this song was in, and didn't really understand the story or the historic reason behind the story, now as an adult I find it rather interesting that the Exodus movie was made in 1960, 55 years ago, and there has yet to be on going peace in that part of the world. At some point they are either going to kill each other until there is nothing left, or I hope rather that they find some peace, but it's doubtful to be in my lifetime.

This song can be interpreted for almost every race of people through out time. Who have sought out their God and place on this earth. Who were either force to flee for religious or philosophical differences. Pat Boone wrote these beautiful lyrics to one of the greatest melodies ever penned. +BangOn2YOU I agree with you that this is a good song to the core however the Nina Paley version brought into light the selfish message behind the song that this land is MINE (as in me and people who agree with/follow me and my cult) and no one else's and I will fight and kill anyone who I don't want to live in me and my ''God' land''.

A message that too often leads to division of people and especially warfare which is what Nina Paley's version was trying to convey in a comedic lighthearted way. Also the Nina Paley version was a parody so it wasn't meant to be taken 100% seriously either.
