「夏の終り」は、音楽を続けるために恋人と別れた「秋の気配」の主人公の一年後の情景なのかもしれません。
「あれがあなたの好きな場所 港が見下ろせる小高い公園」と「誰よりも懐かしい人はこの丘の空が好きだった」
この2曲の「あなた」と「懐かしい人」は、どうも同一人物のような気がします。そして、「小高い公園」と「この丘」は「港の見える丘公園」なのでしょう。
「あの歌だけは他の誰にも歌わないでね」と彼女は主人公にお願いしたわけですが、優しい彼女は「諦めないで歌うことだけは 誰にでも朝は訪れるから」と主人公を勇気付けてもいたことでしょう。
場所は公園近くのカフェかもしれません。「黙って外を見ている」主人公は「別れの言葉を探している」わけです。
そして彼女が何かを言いかけた時、主人公は別れの言葉を口にしたに違いありません。主人公はそれをずっと気にしています。「優しかった恋人よ その後何を言いかけたの?僕の言葉があなたを遮るように、こぼれたあの時」と。
主人公と別れた後、彼女は別れの場所となったカフェで働き始めたのかもしれません。元々働いていたかもしれません。ともかく一年後に気になった主人公は、店のガラス越しに彼女の姿を目に止めます。でも、ドアを開けることなく踵を返します。「今日はあなたの声も聞かないで このままここから帰るつもり」と。
「秋の気配」では港を見下ろす視線でしたが、「夏の終り」では「この丘の空が」と視線が上なんですよね。彼女の思い出を胸の奥にしまい、自分の道を歩いていこうという主人公の心境なのでしょう。「この手で触れてはいけないもの」なのだと言い聞かせながら帰る時、主人公の視線は上を向いていたはずです。
以上、私の個人的な妄想ですが、リリースは「秋の気配」が77年8月のシングル(アルバム「JUNKTION」は9月)で「夏の終り」が78年10月のアルバム「FAIRWAY」なんですよね。小田さん、「夏の終り」を作るとき「秋の気配」を意識したのでしょうか?

主人公からすれば、一年前の夏はまだ彼女と別れていなかったわけで。彼女と恋人同士だった「あの夏」へ帰りたい。でも現実には「駆け抜けてゆく夏の終りは 薄れてゆくあなたの匂い」なんですよね。「冬は夏に帰りたい」けど「あの夏」へは帰れないのです。時はサラサラと流れ、季節はめぐり、これからも夏はやってくるけど、あの夏へは決して帰れない。
「誰かをあなたが愛しているとしたら・・・」主人公にとって彼女はもう手の届かない存在です。でも、彼女は今後誰を愛そうと主人公のことは忘れないでしょう。「秋の気配」の別れの場面で「あの歌だけは他の誰にも歌わないでね」とお願いした「あの歌」を彼女が口ずさむ時に、彼女にとって大切な憧れの存在として主人公のことを思い出すでしょう。
二人にとって、互いの存在は「そっとそこにそのままで微かに輝くべきもの 決してもう一度この手で触れてはいけないもの」になったのでしょう。

夏の終りから秋の気配を感じる頃、二人は思い出すのでしょうね。あの頃のことを。

この詩の通りですね。思い出はあまり確かめない方がいい。「そっとそこにそのままで」「決してもう一度触れてはいけないもの」若い時には気がつかなかった「夏の終わり」の繊細な詩が６０歳近くなってしみじみと理解できます。メジャーになる前のオフコースの名曲ですね。

40年くらい前、この歌にピッタリ嵌まった別れがありました。確かアルバムに入ってた曲で、聴いたとき涙が溢れました。
今でも好きだった彼女のことが忘れられません。この曲を聴くたび、彼女を思い出します。
