Her career began in the late 1960s when she recorded a few folk and blues records, primarily as a part of the band Carmen Maki & Blues Creation, but also as a solo artist, with her debut album "真夜中の詩集 ろうそくが消えるまで" (Poems in the Midnight: Till the Candle Goes Out), released in 1969.
In the 1970s, she formed a rock band called Carmen Maki & OZ. Later she recorded a solo heavy metal album in 1979, in collaboration with the drummer Carmine Appice. She left music in 1984 due to health problems. After ten years of absence, she returned to music again in 1993.
Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
I cry... you cry...
(I cry)
(You cry)
(I really want you to know me tonight)

The lyrics to カルメン・マキ's song あなたが欲しい "Anata ga hoshii" (I want you) is a heartbreaking reflection of a person who feels left behind in the world. The opening line "Doko ka, dare ka, aa, inai no ka" (Somewhere, someone, ah, isn't there) immediately sets the tone for the rest of the song, which focuses on the singer's loneliness and desperate search for someone to be with. The singer questions if anyone truly cares and if anyone is really laughing and happy while they are so miserable.
The lyrics continue to describe the singer's feelings of isolation and alienation, mentioning how they cannot stand being alone and even resort to going out at night just to be amongst people, even though they know they won't find anyone for them. The lines "Konna ego no katamari mitai na hitogomi ni, sagashiteru hito nanka iru wake nakute" (In this crowd of selfish people, there's no reason for me to be searching for someone) express the futility of the search, which only adds to the singer's sadness.
The chorus "Anata ga hoshii" (I want you) is a desperate plea for someone to understand and care about them. The lines "Kou yatte hito wa kusatte iku? Watashi ni wa ne, dare ka inai no ka" (Is this how people rot away? Don't I have someone?) express the fear that the singer is doomed to be alone forever and that life may not have any meaning if there's no one to share it with. The song ends on a poignant note with the repeated line "Anata ga hoshii" (I want you), highlighting the emptiness and longing in the singer's heart.
