The band's roots trace back to 1975, when Kuwata Keisuke was part of a popular group Better Days. The group saw many changes to its name and members. It was when keyboardist Hara Yuko and bassist Sekiguchi Kazuyuki joined the group that it had a permanent name.
After more and more changes of members, the group finally saw light as they released their debut single 'Katte ni Sinbad' in 1978.
January of 2000 saw the release of TSUNAMI, which was #1 on the Oricon charts for 5 weeks, selling almost 3 million copies. The single was marked the 3rd best-selling one in Japan.
In 2003, HMV Japan announced Southern All Stars to be the No.1 Japanese pop artist in its survey of “Top 100 Japanese pops Artists” all-time.

銭乞う日のアリバイ
バレるような折りは御苦労
俺はラッキー
知れずハッピー
いい暮らしと大枚抱いてノホホホホホン
営利議員だけのシンバサイズ
受ける法の網はどうしよう
(Ev'ry word fakes you)
俺はラッキー
知れずハッピー
先人は愛人抱いてオロロロロロン
啓蒙は低級党じゃ暗い
Where is your paradise?
It's better on my side
寄らば大樹の影のように
色は gray, so come on!!
Ah-ah-ah look up to your heaven
危機議員達のパラダイス
世に問う日のアドバイス
うかる前の策は御苦労
(Ev'ry word fakes you)
俺はラッキー
知れずハッピー
政略で令嬢抱いてノホホホホホン
曖味な迷宮性が美味い
Where is your paradise?
It's better on my side
待てば手形の雨が降る
街は gray, so come on!!
Woo, baby c'mon
Woo, now I'm alone
Woo, baby c'mon, ah-ah
Woo, baby c'mon
Woo, now I'm alone
Woo, baby c'mon, ah-ah
色は gray, so come on!!
街は gray, so come on!!
The lyrics of 政治家 by サザンオールスターズ incorporate a political theme, with the use of words such as "危機議員" (crisis lawmakers) and "営利議員" (profit-making lawmakers). The song sets a satirical tone towards politicians who are more concerned with their personal gain than the well-being of their constituents. The use of the words "銭乞う日のアリバイ" (begging for money with excuses) and "受ける法の網はどうしよう" (what to do with the legal net that catches me) is a reference to the prevalence of corrupt practices amongst politicians who engage in illegal acts under the guise of politics.
Furthermore, the lyrics indicate that the public is unaware of the true nature of these politicians, with the phrase "知れずハッピー" (unknowingly happy) used to describe the public's perception. The chorus of the song "Where is your paradise? It's better on my side" is a critique of the false promises and failed policies of politicians. The lyrics are a call to action for the people to question their leaders and make informed choices.
Overall, the song highlights the greed and corruption in politics and urges the public to be informed and vigilant in their dealings with politicians.
