The band's roots trace back to 1975, when Kuwata Keisuke was part of a popular group Better Days. The group saw many changes to its name and members. It was when keyboardist Hara Yuko and bassist Sekiguchi Kazuyuki joined the group that it had a permanent name.
After more and more changes of members, the group finally saw light as they released their debut single 'Katte ni Sinbad' in 1978.
January of 2000 saw the release of TSUNAMI, which was #1 on the Oricon charts for 5 weeks, selling almost 3 million copies. The single was marked the 3rd best-selling one in Japan.
In 2003, HMV Japan announced Southern All Stars to be the No.1 Japanese pop artist in its survey of “Top 100 Japanese pops Artists” all-time.

よりそうだけなら お互いのためじゃない
恋に恋してりゃ あいそも尽きてく
思いがけぬまま 醒めてゆくだけのムード
I'm waiting for you like another lovers do, oh
忘れえぬ日の morning moon
言葉ひとつきりで わかり合う
I'm waiting for you like another lovers do, oh
I love you, 'cause you treat me right
In the lyrics of サザンオールスターズ's song "朝方ムーンライト" (Asagata Moonlight), the artist expresses feelings of longing and uncertainty in a relationship. The opening lines question if the listener can understand the singer's cold and distant emotions. They suggest that merely being close to each other is not enough if it is not for the sake of both parties involved.
The next lines convey the idea that when one falls in love with the idea of being in love, the affection can eventually fade away unexpectedly. The mood of the relationship changes without warning, leaving the singer feeling disillusioned.
The chorus repeats the sentiment of waiting for the love interest like any other lover would, reminiscing about unforgettable mornings under the moon. The singer hopes to have another chance to be honest and open in their communication, where just a single word can bring understanding and connection between them.
The lyrics continue with the desire to become the person the singer loves the most and dream of being able to gaze into each other's eyes. There is a mention of the sound of rain between sighs, which brings a comforting ambiance. The singer feels that their heart melts because of the gestures made by their love interest. The song concludes with the declaration of love, emphasizing that the reason for the singer's affection is because they are treated right.
Overall, "朝方ムーンライト" represents a plea for clearer and more meaningful communication in a relationship, acknowledging the ups and downs that love can bring.
