The band's roots trace back to 1975, when Kuwata Keisuke was part of a popular group Better Days. The group saw many changes to its name and members. It was when keyboardist Hara Yuko and bassist Sekiguchi Kazuyuki joined the group that it had a permanent name.
After more and more changes of members, the group finally saw light as they released their debut single 'Katte ni Sinbad' in 1978.
January of 2000 saw the release of TSUNAMI, which was #1 on the Oricon charts for 5 weeks, selling almost 3 million copies. The single was marked the 3rd best-selling one in Japan.
In 2003, HMV Japan announced Southern All Stars to be the No.1 Japanese pop artist in its survey of “Top 100 Japanese pops Artists” all-time.

Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴
These lyrics are from the song "Michi" (道) by サザンオールスターズ (Southern All Stars). The song is about embracing a reckless and dangerous love and the idea that even those who may indulge in such love or pursue questionable partners can become "singers." The lyrics suggest that as long as it brings joy and happiness, it's okay to embrace such a lifestyle.
The song portrays the singer as someone who is clever but cruel, poor in appearance but tries to show off, and may not have much money. Despite these flaws, they have a carefree attitude, but deep inside, their heart holds a love that is only for one person. They believe that this person is the only one they have ever loved, and they hope that the person believes and trusts in them.
The lyrics also express that they cannot live without this person and that they will shed tears for them. Even if others mock them with their unpleasant voice and call them ugly, they have a song dedicated only to this person. They believe that this is their way of doing things and that life is like a fleeting dream or a fragile story. They wonder how far this path will continue for the person they love.
Overall, the song explores the theme of unconventional love and the dedication one can have for a particular person, even in the face of societal judgment.
