The band's roots trace back to 1975, when Kuwata Keisuke was part of a popular group Better Days. The group saw many changes to its name and members. It was when keyboardist Hara Yuko and bassist Sekiguchi Kazuyuki joined the group that it had a permanent name.
After more and more changes of members, the group finally saw light as they released their debut single 'Katte ni Sinbad' in 1978.
January of 2000 saw the release of TSUNAMI, which was #1 on the Oricon charts for 5 weeks, selling almost 3 million copies. The single was marked the 3rd best-selling one in Japan.
In 2003, HMV Japan announced Southern All Stars to be the No.1 Japanese pop artist in its survey of “Top 100 Japanese pops Artists” all-time.

The lyrics of サザンオールスターズ's song Bye Bye My Love tell the story of a person reminiscing about a past love. The world around this person is full of illusions and is simply a figment of their imagination. The person is waiting for their love and is overcome by their presence, both physically and emotionally, thus becoming one with them. The angelic presence of the color blue is a sign of how love can transcend all borders and physical limitations. The person speaks about their desire to embrace their love and the intensity of their feelings for them. However, despite the words of the song, tears spill down the person's face as they come to an understanding of the true depth of their emotions.
In the second stanza, the person dreams of a world beyond the rainbow where their memories of their love exist. They express that they understand their feelings, but this understanding only fuels their desire to hold their love close. In the third stanza, the person speaks of their sorrow in knowing that their love is out of reach and that they can only cry while others are sleeping.
