The band's roots trace back to 1975, when Kuwata Keisuke was part of a popular group Better Days. The group saw many changes to its name and members. It was when keyboardist Hara Yuko and bassist Sekiguchi Kazuyuki joined the group that it had a permanent name.
After more and more changes of members, the group finally saw light as they released their debut single 'Katte ni Sinbad' in 1978.
January of 2000 saw the release of TSUNAMI, which was #1 on the Oricon charts for 5 weeks, selling almost 3 million copies. The single was marked the 3rd best-selling one in Japan.
In 2003, HMV Japan announced Southern All Stars to be the No.1 Japanese pop artist in its survey of “Top 100 Japanese pops Artists” all-time.

Tiny, tiny, it's gonna be your own fault, babe
Tiny bubbles, someone is gonna hurt you bad
Are you a fool? Are you a fool? Or is it true
Tiny bubbles, I'm gonna hurt you like you done me
Tiny, tiny, it's gonna be your own fault, babe
Tiny bubbles, someone is gonna hurt you bad
Once I had a little girl, her name was liz
She has gone away from here to stay
I don't know how to take care of a girl
And you know that I can't make it
Tiny bubbles, I'm gonna hurt you like you done me
Tiny, tiny, it's gonna be your own fault, babe
Tiny bubbles, someone is gonna hurt you bad
Are you a fool? Are you a fool? Or is it true
Everybody, once I had a little girl, her name was liz
She has gone away from here to stay
I don't know how to take care of a girl
And you know that I can't make it
Once I had a little girl, her name was liz
She has gone away from here to stay
I don't know how to take care of a girl
And you know that I can't make it
The lyrics of サザンオールスターズ's song "Tiny Bubbles" speak to a sense of betrayal and longing for revenge. The singer expresses their desire to hurt someone, just as they have been hurt, using the metaphor of "tiny bubbles." This person has caused them pain, and now the singer wants to make them experience the same hurt. The repetition of the phrase "Tiny bubbles, I'm gonna hurt you like you done me" emphasizes their determination for revenge.
The singer questions whether the person they are addressing is a fool or if their actions are truly as hurtful as they seem. This uncertainty suggests a deep emotional turmoil within the singer, torn between seeking revenge and understanding the motivations of the person who hurt them.
The song then shifts focus to a past relationship with a girl named Liz. The singer reveals that Liz has left, pointing out their inability to take care of a girl and their own struggles with the situation. This could be seen as a reflection on their own limitations and failures in past relationships, possibly serving as a context for their current desire for revenge.
The repetition of the lines "Once I had a little girl, her name was Liz" and "She has gone away from here to stay" underscores the sense of loss and longing for the past relationship, further highlighting the singer's emotional vulnerability. They admit the challenges they face in maintaining relationships and express a lack of confidence in their ability to make things work.
Overall, "Tiny Bubbles" captures the complexity of emotions surrounding betrayal, revenge, and personal struggles in relationships. It delves into the singer's desire for vengeance while also acknowledging their own limitations and past failures in love.
