After graduating from Tokyo Keizai University, he worked as a "salaryman" for four years in the advertisement industry. Debuting with a major label EP album release in 1997, his J-Pop music has funk and soul influence, coupled with beautiful and moving lyrics.
Several of his songs have been used in the TV anime show Honey and Clover, including '8gatsu no Serenade', 'Tsuki to Knife' and 'Yubikiri'. Yozora no Mukou ("Beyond the Night Sky"), the song he wrote the lyrics to, and sung by Smap, has appeared in several Japanese music textbooks. More recently, some of his songs have been used in the anime series xxxHolic, most notably the opening theme "19sai". Also, his song 'Yuudachi' ("Evening Shower") was used as the opening theme for the 2000 anime series Boogiepop Phantom. In addition, his song "Manatsu no Yoru no Yume" (A Midsummer Night's Dream) was used as a theme in the first Death Note movie, which came out June 2006.
AFFAIR
Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
The song "Affair" by スガシカオ tells the story of a person who engages in an affair and reflects on the aftermath of their actions. The first verse describes how the affair kept happening, leading to a sad event that quietly occurred. The singer wasn't aware, but their hands ended up picking sunflowers during summertime. The second verse conveys the depth of the singer's emotions. Even if they leave harsh words for their lover, their feelings are much deeper than what their lover might think. The person reminisces about memories that seem to be endless, although they may not remember them all. The third verse expresses uncertainty about whether the singer has become kinder since the affair. The singer lets things pass by, as if everything has become the norm. The fourth and final verse depicts the passage of time with the changing of seasons, and how people tend to forget things over time, even if they are convenient.
The overall message of the song is that affairs can lead to a lot of emotional baggage and can cause people to question who they really are. The singer seems to feel deeply conflicted about their actions and whether they have changed as a person. The song's lyrics suggest that the singer is trying to come to terms with their actions, but is struggling to let go of the emotional weight.
