Born in Shinjuku, Tokyo Japan, as a young girl she fell in love with American jazz that she heard on the armed forces radio broadcasts. Growing up listening to Frank Sinatra, Glenn Miller Band, and Doris Day, she decided to join an amateur jazz band and started singing for GI's at the base in Yokohama. Peggy Hayama became one of Japan’s top female jazz vocalists.

The song "爪" by Peggy Hayama is a poignant reflection on a past relationship and the aftermath of its ending. The first verse describes the apartment that the couple once shared, and how each of them has since left on their own. The singer reflects that this is now a beautiful dream, but one that can only exist without the presence of the former partner. She urges herself to give up the bad habit of biting her nails, which may be a nervous habit left over from the discomfort of the past relationship. In the second verse, the memory of the past relationship is described as "like a lie" because it seems so distant from the present. The singer expresses a reluctance to continue down the path she is on and a sense of unease, but reassures herself that she will be okay. She once again urges herself to give up the bad habit of nail biting.
Overall, the song captures a sense of longing for a past that is no longer attainable, but also the need to let go and move on in order to find peace.
