She attempted suicide in July 1989 in her then-boyfriend 近藤真彦 (Masahiko Kondo)'s apartment after discovering that 松田聖子 (Seiko Matsuda), her main competition, and her boyfriend were having an affair together. Afterward, she disappeared from the public eye and is rumored to have spent her days drinking heavily in Hawaii. Her career since her suicide attempt has never regained the popularity she experienced in the early- to mid-1980s. But she kept performing even after 1996. Her performances before Japanese audiences continue to be of high quality. Her 2000, 2002 and 2003 concerts attracted large numbers of fans. She still performs and releases original songs (as of 2005). She is also on the New Year’s TV show Kōhaku Uta Gassen.

The song "燠火" by Nakamori Akina speaks of two love stories, one in winter and the other in summer. The winter story talks about a delicate and injured white swan resting her wings while being in fear of her own heart's trembling. She wears a silver bracelet loosely around her slender wrist and her sigh feels like the mist at dawn. Despite being in love, she refuses to say "I love you," as she feels that it will not be enough. The summer story, on the other hand, takes place in a moonlit room with an open skylight where the lovers are entwined into a hallucination of love. The flow of time seems to be corrupting their love, and they lament over the repetitive and uncontrollable emotions. Here too, the phrase "I love you" is not spoken, but the embrace is so tight that they tighten their grip on each other even while falling apart.
The lyrics of the song contrast the coldness of winter and the heat of summer with the fragility of love, and the reluctance to speak of love seems to express the fear and uncertainties of relationships. It feels that the winter and summer stories have similarities of being beautiful, painful, but ephemeral to the same extent.
