To be fair, the fortress does throw fighters at you to hint at you to be able to deal with them(the briefing even mentions that previous attack waves were destroyed by both anti-air and *enemy fighters*), and the air to air/ground level recommendation on the right even has a relatively high air-to-air level, so that your squadmates will call you out for not having great air-to-air capabilities. The game leaves you plenty of hints to not take a pure ground attacker.

Whenever I played this mission, the radar was still being jammed, even after I shot down the two E-767s. A thought just occurred to me, there was probably a third jammer, that the player wouldn't be able to find. I have a wild, but very possible theory here. You ever notice how when Edge yells "Thunderhead respond!" He doesn't say anything, after the radar becomes jammed? What if Thunderhead was in on this plan to ambush Wardog, and he was the 3rd jammer aircraft?

Its a been a while so this is fuzzy to me... But I remember being focused on the fact that the 8492nd was an Osean (Belkan) Squadron when I was at this point in the story. Therefore, as soon as they fired on me, I kind of instinctively raised an eyebrow and distrusted anything Osean until I later learned the truth of course. But at that moment, I remember being super suspicious of Thunderhead to as he was a "higher" Osean officer and it only made sense if he was a significant enemy to and had led me into the trap. I can't remember, and also I was focused on the intense fight so I wasn't paying to much attention to recall well, but after the merge, Thunderhead doesn't speak much if at all for the rest of the mission right? He's usually on top of things with missiles and evasions and updates, I remember this fight being eerily quiet other than Nagase typical dramatic cries in the beginning, after that it was just my console beeps and close flybys

I say this because on previous missions where your radar is jammed, you can hear Thunderhead say "ECCM! Restore communication link!" But not on this mission. Probably because he makes no attempt to unjam the radar, because in actuality, he is jamming it.

metrocop1000 if you read the Ace Combat fanon about Galaan Scharfefaust, it references AWACS Thunderhead being a Belkan spy, with his real call sign being CRAC Schmerzmittel (CRAC, according to that fanon, stands for Covert Reconnaissance Airborne Carrier). I know that this alternate storyline is not canon, but the part about Thunderhead being a Belkan spy just may have struck home. The storyline that Namco went with for this Ace Combat 5 was interesting enough, but imagine if they had hired whoever wrote that fanon to come up with the storyline. Would've made an already impressive game even more impressive.

Parker Jones I think he would've been aware of the communication link being jammed when his radar went grey and Wardog disappeared off the radar screen,(due to the the Belkans' jamming it) and he tried to hail Wardog squad on the radio and heard nothing but garbled transmissions and static. Keep in mind, in past missions, he tried to re-establish a communication link with Wardog whenever the radar was jammed. So it's very likely that he heard them trying to call him, but didn't respond, because he was jamming as well.

It's always possible, and even rather easy if you have enough experience and you choose the right plane for Mission 18. Too bad they don't let you preemptively shoot down the 8492. I tried doing that during my first play through because I saw the ambush coming.

This mission is almost impossible at Ace level. Even with the prototype planes, the number of the opponents and their flying ability is astonishing. The AI is clever, the plane that you are aiming for rush forward to keep you busy meanwhile all the other planes follow and attack you at once. You can trick the AI changing your target every three to five seconds. This makes the enemy split up and less aggressive.

Aside from being forced right into this in a fucking A-10, I lost my shit when my squadmates started talking franctic, the music was building up, jets (lots and lots of jets. Yes i was fooled by jammers the first time) looots and lots of jets were flying at me, i went fucking beserk.....im sure everyone did the first time...

Whenever I wanted a challenge in this game, I'd just start this mission, then stay and fight. Some people don't think it can be done, but I recommend it. You'll mostly die, but anything else (except maybe Schwartze in ACZ) will seem to be on easy for you afterwards. :)

AC5 had terrible ai, SAM missiles wouldn't track, and ace difficulty was just meh because you'd have to do some really stupid stuff to get OHKO'd by a missile. ACZ tried to fix some of it, but the regular ai (not the squadron ai at B7R and such) still had issues dodging XLAAs

AC6 did do a lot to fix stuff, but it overnerfed the XLAAs to the point i'd rather have XMAAs, QAAMs were still kinda ok but still meh (they were OP as fuck in AC4), RCLs got a major buff but it was later found that they're best used as an air fortress buster (which left the LASM as still the best all-around anti ground weapon), SAMs actually track, AA guns do a lot more than they did in past games, the A-10 has a death cannon in it's nose. It did a lot of stuff, but it still isn't really enough.

Man, Grimm's "Oh-No!" line is so cheesy, but no one plays Ace Combat for good voice actors anyways. Well, I have seen a reviewer say he bought the game for the voice actors (Forgot who what was), so I guess SOMEONE had... It still beats text prompts saying "DEAR GOD IT'S MOBIUS ONE, BAIL OUT NOW!"

LOL the first time I did this mission I was in the A-10. On the briefing I heard that you have to protect some tanks and thats it so I choose the best attack aircraft. Then in the next mission I was flying in the same plane and all of the sudden I was in the middle of a dogfight with a bunch of SU-47s and I was like this isn't fair!!!!!!

The Cover/ SP weapon commands with your wingmen in fighters is key for this. Attack is basically worthless as it focuses on targets in front of you. And these enemies never stay in front of you, all of em just try to swarm your six o' clock. Disperse might yield some results but not by much.

He could have let the plane go into the river and ejected first... hell, he could've done the same thing to the stadium or an empty street. But noo... he /had/ to wait around for all the civvies to clear out before he could even /think/ of ejecting. In war, "heroes" are almost always some of the first to go. Chopper was lucky to last as long as he did.

I forgot to mention, they also brought in a jammer so Thunderhead couldn't call the reinforcements back again. And because it's scripted, the jammer doesn't appear on the map.

On my third playthrough of the campaign... went into the previous mission with the A-10 knowing what was coming after (though I did put the others in Berkuts).

Yes, Nagase, I am totally thinking about shooting down all those fighters with an A-10.

And damn that one coward who got away and ran from me!

The eject handle blows the canopy and the seat, there's still a opener botton in the cockpit or since there was most likely boats in the water somebody would have at least tried to pull him out

A river wouldn't save his life. Just cause it's water doesn't mean the impact at his speed wouldn't be like flying into concrete. Additionally this was before they knew he couldn't eject and additionally it was the safest place to crash the fighter without civilian casualties.

But remember that when Chopper tried to bail out, his canopy wouldn't blow. And the plane still wouldn't have survived from the river, not at that speed.

This mission was fun with the YA-10B because if you lure some planes in close, you can get a bunch of them with a double cluster bomb drop! Try it, it's a fun challenge!

Not to mention the limited time from that the aircraft would be at the top of that arc. Additionally, what's the point of waiting for the stadium to clear if he was willing to just throw the aircraft straight up into the air, jump out, and hope that it doesn't fall somewhere problematic in the middle of a city?

Removing the canopy wouldn't have helped him much even if it was that simple (which it isn't). The parachute, is built into the ejector seat, as is the charge that would have propelled him a safe distance away from the aircraft. He would have been leaving the aircraft in front of the wings and from the top, which is about the worst place I would want to leave an aircraft as I would be risking hitting parts of the plane as I escape in any direction.

Two of the E-767s jamming do appear on the map. (They make those horrible fake signatures like in Mission 10) Though there might have been another one somewhere off the map.

I made the decision to listen to the full soundtrack of this game. This exact track was actually teased during the mission where you shoot down all the cargo planes with ECMs and all that. This song starts playing at the end of the mission when the 8492nd is destroying the Yuke School. The song on that mission is also called "8492nd". Masterful foreshadowing that.

But he wanted the people in the stadium to clear out. if he had ejected earlier in the river, his ejection seat woulda worked and his PFD woulda kept him alive even if he got knocked out

Looking back at it now, Wardog squad’s ejection seats were probably sabotaged. This was a plot to take them all out, and make sure they wouldn’t survive, but they only got Chopper

+Michael Prince Before you try on Ace, I would recommend getting a highly maneuverable plane, like the ADF-01 or maybe the F/A-22A. Also--and I can't stress this enough--KEEP MOVING. Never stay still for long.

Another possible outcome for this mission: the Belkans shoot down Thunderhead instead of just jamming him (they could show the flaming wreckage of Thunderhead's plane plummeting past Wardog to crash into a mountain, and have Grimm or Nagase scream something like, "Oh shit, they got our AWACS!" to make it more ominous). Then the Belkans deploy one or two of their superplanes to try to finish them off. Something like, say, a Morgan. Or even a prototype FALKEN. Anything to better introduce the super fighters to the storyline and give another nod to the Belkan War. And then Wardog gets some help from an unlikely source: A Yuke pilot (flying an X-02) who has also learned the truth about what is going on behind the scenes.
