In the song "Otoko" by Koda Kumi, the lyrics express disappointment and frustration with a man who lacks sincerity and tends to act selfishly in their relationship. The singer addresses the man directly, admonishing him for pretending to be innocent and not discussing other women. The singer feels that he lacks a certain level of kindness and empathy, suggesting that he only offers affection when it suits him and avoids showing vulnerability. She emphasizes that she is not his mother and should not be burdened with his childish behavior.
The lyrics also highlight the man's selfish habits and irresponsibility, as he often turns his back and goes to sleep, expressing his tiredness but failing to consider the singer's feelings. The repeated use of "冗談じゃない" (joudan janai) emphasizes that this behavior is no joking matter. The singer also voices her frustration at the man's constant declarations of love, insinuating that it has become repetitive and lacks substance. She urges him to stop playing around and being excessively self-centered.
The singer then reflects on the general nature of men, suggesting that they are often self-indulgent and pathetic. She expresses her annoyance at their consistent thoughtlessness and how it affects her. The lyrics address the man's pride in being the first one to say "I love you," but the singer dismisses this as irrelevant to measuring real love. She criticizes his lack of communication regarding his whereabouts and how he often doesn't return home until morning, highlighting his inconsiderate nature. The repetition of "冗談じゃない" signifies the weight of the situation.
The chorus repeats the earlier themes, with the singer again expressing her dissatisfaction with the man's proclamation of love, stating that it is not enough. She pleads with him not to play around and act so self-centered. The singer acknowledges that the way he loves is flawed, yet despite knowing this, she wonders how he will make it right and what she should do in response.
Overall, the lyrics of "Otoko" portray a woman's frustration with a man who lacks sincerity, acts selfishly, and fails to meet her emotional needs in a relationship. It highlights the singer's desire for a deeper and more fulfilling love, while reflecting on the general flaws of men's behavior in relationships.
