Born in Tokyo in 1971. Real name, Atsushi Shirakawa. Atsushi Shirakawa is a Japanese music composer from Tokyo, Japan born in 1971. He worked in the Nihon Falcom Corporation as one of the members of Falcom Sound Team J.D.K.. During his time with Falcom, he has composed much music for Falcom games, most notably Brandish.
Having known Makoto Shinkai as a coworker in (minori works)he has composed music for Shinkai's works

I totally can relate to this movie.

I had a best friend and a crush. I knew her since more than 10 years ago. We went to same school, but then she goes to college aboard. We maintained communication well for years and she came back after finish her study.

We were much closer then. The following months were the best of my life. But then she gone aboard again to work. I never thought I'll lost her. Not a bit. I even thought about the future and so on. But as we were more busy with our job than years ago when in college, our communication became less and less.

Then, she had a boyfriend. It was the most heart crushing moment I've ever felt (and I've had my shares about being heartbroken). I met her last time and just to say goodbye. We never talk again since then.

Then I found this movie a year ago or so. I felt like Makoto Shinkai just made my love life in a movie.

Part two was the hardest for me to watch. Unrequited love is to so painful. I don't care what gender you are. I am a guy and I could feel what she was feeling. That person won't look at you. Sees past you to someone else, or something else. You know at the bottom of your heart you have no future with that person, but you keep trying in hopes that will change, but in the end it was for not.

The reason why this is extra sad is because of the previous theme (Poem of sky and sea), and also because of what happened in the anime.
SPOILERS:
Poem of sky and sea plays when kanae finally rides a wave. She feels so happy and determined. The theme itself has a sense of hope and demonstrates the feelings of determination kanae has. She is happy because she has ridden a wave and now she is ready to tell takaki how she feels.
This theme shows what actually happens after that. How every glimmer of hope collapses, as Kanae understands that Takaki is not looking at her.
In my opinion this is what makes this theme so so sad. The fact that it shows how hope and determination become sadness and despair.

Poem of sky and sea is a brilliant melancholic track. It so brilliantly lays forth the intricate tendencies of emotions. Pain is something everyone tries to run away from at least once but, in the end there is no better teacher than Pain.

I'll always cry to hearing any song from the OST. The title reminds of how much I wanted to let her know how i felt. To let her know how much cared. I wanted her to know that I'll be willing to give my own life just to be with her. But my feelings never reached her.

I saw this movie a while back... brought me to tears. I saw myself in the girl in the second aprt. I can't quite remember her name, but I remember her. I had to do the same damn thing... I just wanted to reach into the screen and hold her and tel her she wasn't alone.

This song is one of the best in the movie's OST. Just like Wiish said, it expresses perfectly the feeling of unrequited love. It's sad and it holds so many different emotions in it, even though the melody is quiet simple. That's why this movie is a masterpiece.

As a teenager who did not know how loss would break my heart, I watched this anime with partial shared feelings with the characters. Then, I grew up and I experienced the same situation as one in the anime. This song is very touching my heart and helps me relieve my pain. The song makes me feel a vast distance between notes. The melodies are so soft that somehow I am afraid it cannot reach the audience. There is struggling of the melodies in the later part of the song. They struggle to make themselves heard. The notes are faster and louder but then lose their momentum. Beautiful song.

Moving on is the only solution to the negative scenarios you think up. I learned that the hard way... and while you're moving on, stay away from knives. but really, tell her how you feel. this song perfectly describes the feelings of first love and what it means- blissfully happy, so in love with that person that anything could happen and it wouldnt matter- until it ends. first loves are so bittersweet than you grow up and life happens. but itll always be there to look to remininsce, to look back to the feelings that once made your life special

I can't listen to this without having tears well up. Reminds me of Kanae and how her feelings for Takaki went unrequited, and I really sympathized with her character. And btw I'm a grown man all of 6'4".

This Film is a masterpiece. Some people refer to it as a regular romantic drama. (anime version) Well, I can't see the point in that. 5cm per second has provoked feelings inside of me that had never been touched by any film. So Makoto Shinkai, thank you. The music, the animation... It's incredible.

I have this unbearable sadness of not being able to see her in a very long time, because of how far apart we live from each other. But, for the time we shared, we talked for hours, yet it felt like minutes. I'm glad that I got to know her, but I regret not speaking to her before because we really only talked since yesterday night for three hours together until 3 in the morning and up until she left my house to her home. Someday, I'll take a train to where she live, someday.

The first time I watched the movie, all I cared about really was Takaki. It was not until subsequent views that Cosmonaut became my favorite part just because of Kanae dealing with her unrequited love...and the reveal that Takaki was not texting anyone. Man.

Been there, done that. Even though I loved her character and liked Takaki with her over Akari, I like the way the movie ended. It was real. And I'm ahead of you... read it already. It's implied that they meet up, but that's it. Just before that it was implied that Kanae was no longer stuck on Takaki too, and that he himself wasn't quite ready either, the way he avoided Risa on the train.
