「木綿のハンカチーフ」と対をなす、また甲乙つけがたい好楽曲ですね。
「木綿」が失恋という結末ならこちらはハッピーエンドで女性が救われている点もよし。
またこの歌については普通にアンサーソングとしてとして捉えるのではなく、
以下のように想像して聴いてみるのも面白いのではないかと思います。
それは「木綿」と「赤いハイヒール」の女性は同一人物であり、
彼女のその後が語られた歌という解釈です。
「木綿」の女性がしばらくして上京（それは別れた恋人を追いかけたものかもしれない）し、東京に着いてすぐ自らを変えるべく赤いハイヒールを買う。
昔の恋人のように都会で暮らしていこうとするが、都会は性に合わず上手く馴染めない。
やがて疲れて友達（「赤いハイヒール」の男性）に打ち明け話を語る。素朴な彼はすべてを受けて止めて彼の故郷に帰っていく・・・というストーリー。
多分松本隆さん的には全然別の人（上京時おさげだと年齢が合わない？）として書かれていると思いますが、
二人の女性の同一性は性格、容姿（素顔、そばかす）などにも表れていて、
話の続きとして考えるとより感慨深いのではないかと個人的には思っています。

亡くなられた筒美京平さんは木綿のハンカチーフがお気に入りでしたが私はこの曲のほうが好きです。マイナーで始まり途中からメジャーに転調してハッピーエンドに至る流れにはドラマがあります。

パターン的にいって大ヒットした次にリリースされた曲はだいたいがいまいちな事が多いのに、この「赤いハイヒール」は「木綿のハンカチーフ」に負けず劣らずの大ヒットになったのが驚きでした。さすがは松本隆&筒美京平のゴールデンコンビですね。出だしは寂しい感じの旋律ですが最後の転調の所からパァーッと明るくなっていく感じが大好きです。

筒美京平さんは赤いハイヒール以上の曲は作れないと言ったそうです。木綿のハンカチーフはこの曲に到達するまでの過程かもしれませんね。私は太田裕美さんの曲では最初にレコード買った曲です。当時１２歳でした。
