His birth name is Masayuki Kosaka (小坂正行). He began his career in music with the formation of the band The Floral in 1966. The Floral broke up in 1968 and he formed another short-lived band, Apryl Fool, in 1969, alongside Haruomi Hosono, Takashi Matsumoto, Hiro Yanagida and Eiji Kikuchi. He began his solo career in 1971.
