The lyrics to the song 歩いて帰ろう by 斉藤和義 (Kazuyoshi Saito) are reflective of the daily struggles of life and the desire for a momentary respite from the chaos of the world. The song begins by painting a picturesque image of the bustling city below as the singer gazes down at it from afar. The slow-moving clouds give off a different vibe, one that tries to contrast the hectic lives of the people below. The singer then ponders their inability to communicate their innermost thoughts with anyone, wondering how to proceed. They ask for guidance on what to do.
Throughout the poem, the singer highlights the ever-increasing pace of life and its effects on people. The constant rush causes people to move without purpose, with no time for leisurely activities or getting sidetracked. The singer feels left behind whenever they engage in something other than work. In the second verse, the singer reflects on the seemingly never-ending cycle of life, where false pretenses are used to get through the day, yet the same kind of morning comes again the next day regardless. The song ends with the singer acknowledging the need to slow down and enjoy the beauty of life.
Overall, 歩いて帰ろう is a commentary on the rat race that modern society is embroiled in. Society expects everyone to move faster and produce more, with no regard for individual needs. The singer, in contrast, recognizes that sometimes it's necessary to slow down and appreciate the simple things in life.
