20 girls were selected for the first generation and were announced on August 21, 2015. On November 30, 2015 an "under group" was announced under the name of Hiragana Keyakizaka46 (けやき坂46) with Nagahama Neru as the only member. Auditions for more members were announced at the same time, and there are currently 20 members.
The group released their debut single, "サイレントマジョリティー (Silent Majority)" on April 6, 2016.
