Raul was a hero for humanity, driven to despair by the loss of Pino, the only being he could ever have come close to feeling for. Daedalus was brilliant scientist, driven to madness by no reciprocation from everything he put his heart into. The fatalism in this show is incredible.

@Vayne Carudas Solidor I'd hardly call it a mess. Everything therein is explained to you at length and in great depth out in the open. It's actually rare that an anime straight up tells you what's going on like this and doesn't just let you flounder like a fish out of water.

The show isn't emotionless at all, in my humble opinion. The anime coming from a japanese background (obviously) conveys states of mind. It is laced with emotion and feeling. The seeming lack thereof conveys the sensation of boredom (Busy Doing Nothing track of the OST), claustrophobia, isolation (Wasteland Nostalgia), despair (Angel's Share), abandon, desolation (Shampoo Planet). The show is an impressive palette of sorrow and hope.. seeming irony and laced with subtle utopias. It's a MUST SEE!

I spent multiple episodes thinking Daedalus was a girl. I love the brevity. Saying nothing more than what needs to be said is a sign of a good author and respect for the reader (not over-explaining). That the Japanese do this more easily (context language after all) is absolutely great! To add to that, I've noticed that some English dubs talk almost twice as much as the original Japanese (Castle in the Sky).

Japanese are well known for creating "flashes of insight expressed in a sliver of verse." Their works say a lot through their brevity and scarcity. I see the same thing in the characters of Ergo Proxy. We see just an inkling of who they are and we try to discover the rest ourselves. That's what helps us connect to the characters and still leave you questioning "Was I right about that character? Is he/she who I thought they were?" and that's one of the many interesting tidbits from this show

Lawrence Reamon

For the show, 11/10! It's amazing!

Black Wolf

Ergo proxy is so misterious, I just finished watching it but Im already planning on reviewing the whole anime again soon, its all so good, specially the characters and their personalities.

@Carrion29 Let us not forget the one, fulcral dystopia on which this anime revolves on. Truly this anime is unique in the way that it conveys many different and similar emotions in mere moments. Boredom seems to have been a medium through which other, deeper emotions flow, such as the ones you've mentioned, with the exception of claustrophobia (which, in my opinion, is ill placed, and in fact, I have yet to find it within the anime)

AKA "Holy crap Raul's going insane."
