黒いカバンをぶらさげて
I was walking with my black bag hanging over my shoulder

歩いていると
While I was walking

おまわりさんに 呼ぴとめられた
I was stopped by a police officer

おまえは誰だというので

ぽくは人間ですよ と答えたのです

すると おまえはと大きな声で
Then he said loudly

"What's your name?"

あなたのお名前は と尋ねると
He asked, "What's your name?"

それはいえない という
I said, "I can't tell you that."

それは変ですね
He thought that was strange

人は会って まして初対面なら
If you meet someone for the first time

お互いに名のるのか
Isn't it common to exchange names?

最低の礼儀でしょう というと
I said, "That's the least of our concerns."

おまわりは
The police officer

たてつくのかというので
Asked me if I was being disrespectful

礼儀知らず というと
I said, "You have no manners."

なに!とおこったが
He got angry and said, "What?!"

思いなおしたように彼は
But then he seemed to have a change of heart

まあ今度だけは許してやる などと
