No Surprises
电台司令(Radiohead) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A heart that's full up like a landfill
A job that slowly kills you
Bruises that won't heal

You look so tired and unhappy
Bring down the government
They don't, they don't speak for us
I'll take a quiet life
A handshake, some carbon monoxide

No alarms and no surprises
No alarms and no surprises
No alarms and no surprises
Silent, silent

This is my final fit, my final bellyache with

No alarms and no surprises
No alarms and no surprises
No alarms and no surprises please

Such a pretty house, such a pretty garden

No alarms and no surprises (let me out of here)

No alarms and no surprises (let me out of here)
No alarms and no surprises please (let me out of here)

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "No Surprises" by Radiohead explore the theme of emotional emptiness and dissatisfaction with life. The first verse describes someone who feels overwhelmed and overwhelmed like they have too much in their life, but nothing that really fills them up. The reference to a landfill emphasizes that even though this person may have accumulations in their life, they feel it's all just garbage. The second line moves towards the cause of this unhappiness, which the lyrics suggest is a soul-sucking job that leaves bruises that don't heal. The second verse zooms out from this individual experience to a broader social critique, where the singer asks to bring down the government that doesn't represent the people. The third verse expresses a wish to live with no alarms and no surprises, wanting a quiet life without any sudden shocks. The final fit and bellyache imply a feeling that the singer cannot take the emptiness anymore and begs for no more alarms and surprises.

Overall, the song reflects the feelings of disconnection and disengagement with life that many people experience, and suggests that a life of quiet regularity may be preferable to one filled with empty excitement. The longing for simplicity, peace, and control over one's life resonates deeply with many, and the lyrics paint a poignant picture of frustration and despair.

this song sounds like despair, no hope left just acceptance. it feels like what it feels like to be absoloutly crushed, tears streaming down your face but somehow everything is ok

@BlackAlbino2000

It definitely brings up emotions of sadness and despair and your life being crushed . I always thought it’s about the realization that these socially accepted conforming norms of what we see as having a happy life are merely going to make you more miserable and dull and end up drowning you slowly till your time’s up . If I’d put it very direct , a life lived without surprises is like slow suicide but if you seek further than these norms you get curious about what really matters in your life and this brings you true happiness .
