Lyrics

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to "Minato Uta" or "Harbor Song" by Sayuri Ishikawa evoke the melancholy beauty of a harbor town in winter. The opening lines describe the singer arriving at a sailor's tavern ("sakaba") where she takes down her luggage after an entire year at sea. It's already June and the snowflakes begin to fall, and as she drinks, she asks to be allowed to forget her worries in the warmth of the alcohol. She implores her companion to stay with her as he did in the past, calling herself a crybaby but insisting that she needs someone to tell her off sometimes.

The second verse is even more forlorn as the singer reveals that she has abandoned her Tokyo lifestyle and her fancier, big-city way of speaking ("Tokyo kotoba") to return to her hometown and become a local girl. She reminisces about the man who once held her, his warmth and her own naivety, and she begs for her companion to warm her feet and sing her a lullaby. The final verse describes the atmosphere in the bar, where men and women engage in escape and seek comfort in the bottle. The singer feels like a lost bird if she doesn't drink, and while she longs to be by her companion's side, she asks him merely to stroke her hair and sing her a lullaby.
