Taki No Shiraito
石川さゆり Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to 石川さゆり's song Taki No Shiraito convey a message of love, sacrifice and contentment. The opening lines translate to "If only our hearts are content, that's enough." The singer of the song encourages her beloved to pursue his dreams in Tokyo, even if it means hardship. The recurring image of the white threads of the waterfall is a symbol of love, blossoming even in difficult circumstances. The singer professes her unwavering love for her beloved, stating that as long as she may love, there is no reason to be worried about tomorrow.

The song can be interpreted as a commentary on Japanese society in the post-World War II era, which was going through a phase of rapid development and transformation. The singer's willingness to let her beloved go to the big city, and her contentment with seemingly simple things, are perhaps a reflection of the Japanese ethos of quiet endurance and self-sacrifice. The theme of love blossoming in the shadow of adversity, symbolized by the waterfall, is also a common motif in Japanese literature, art and poetry.

A film that seemed a little bit strange at first as I'm not used to that kind of films (actually is my first silent Japanese film and with a bensi narrator and specifically a woman making all voices) but as the story developed I started to get used to it and got interested, so I finally saw the whole film. It is a good film for its era but the most important aspect of it is the story, truly one of the most beautiful love stories I've seen in films. Some funny and light moments alternated with moments of pure love and at the same time we see the life of the traveling entertainers of the era and their struggles through the story of Taiko no Shiraito. I also like how the film realistically shows men trying to take advantage of women (important thing to do in 30s) and how it captures the strength and dignity of that woman. I give an 7.5/10

What a beautiful story! And loved the voice(s) of Sawato Midori, a true honour.

Thank you! Beautiful movie by a master director. Love the benshii accompaniment to this silent movie, even if it´s strange to listen to "the Merry widow waltz" performed by japanese tuned instruments!

EvolutionRevolution

Sawato Midori, seamlessly moving from character to character, but the best treat is when she invokes her deeper registers for the male voices!

Luckynumber78

She's amazing!

TheNoudio

That's what I thought too!

Yolanda Midence

Unexpected ending! Loved it

guignol

unexpected? it was the only possible ending according to the logic of japanese drama of the day.
