Free Fallin'
约翰梅尔John Mayer Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
Loves Jesus and America too
Shes a good girl, crazy 'bout Elvis
Loves horses and her boyfriend too
It's a long day living in Reseda
There's a freeway runnin' through the yard
And I'm a bad boy 'cause I don't even miss her
[Chorus]
And I'm free, free fallin' fallin'
And I'm free, free fallin' fallin'
All the vampires walkin' through the valley
They move west down Ventura Boulevard
And all the bad boys are standing in the shadows
And the good girls go home with broken hearts
[Chorus]
Free fallin', now I'm free fallin', now I'm
Free fallin', now I'm free fallin', now I'm
Free fallin', now I'm free fallin', now I'm
Free fallin', now I'm free fallin',
I wanna glide down over Mulholland
I wanna write her name in the sky
I wanna free fall out into nothin'
Oh I'm gonna leave this, this world for a while
[Chorus]
Now I'm free, free fallin', fallin'
Now I'm free, free fallin', fallin'
Free fallin', fallin'
Free fallin', fallin'
Free fallin', fallin'
"Free Fallin'" by John Mayer is a cover of the Tom Petty classic song. It begins with the description of a "good girl" who loves her family, her religion, horses, and her boyfriend. The song then shifts to a different character who is a "bad boy" living in Reseda where there is a freeway running through the yard. He admits to being a bad person for breaking the good girl's heart, but doesn't show any remorse as he is "free fallin'" and living his life without any attachment.
The song then mentions "vampires" walking through the valley, which is a reference to the drug and party culture in Los Angeles. The bad boys are standing in the shadows, while the good girls go home with broken hearts. The chorus repeats the phrase "free fallin'" indicating that he is living a life free of restraints, emotions, and responsibilities.
In the bridge, the singer desires to glide down over Mulholland, a scenic route in Los Angeles. He wants to write her name in the sky, which could mean he wants to be remembered by her or considers her a higher power. Lastly, he says he wants to free fall out into nothing, indicating he wants to take a break from reality or simply cease to exist.
The song's lyrics are interpreted differently by the listeners, but more often than not, it is considered a song about rebellion and freedom. An interesting fact about this song is that despite being one of the most iconic and universally recognized songs written by Tom Petty, it was not a huge hit when it was first released in 1990. It became more popular as time went on and has since become a classic.
