An innovation completely changes a paradigm. For example, it's long been thought, even today, that fossil fuel use is finite. It's not -- fossil fuel use has become a zero-sum equation. Why? Because a few years ago, a company in Canada innovated and invented a process whereby carbon can be recaptured from the air, and fuels like gasoline can be synthesized from the captured carbon.

Other innovations would include things like going from carburation to fuel injection in cars in 1989. Even the PC, invented by Bill Gates, was an innovation that flipped network computing on its head in 1987. Henry Ford was also an innovator -- inventing the assembly line in 1903 as a way to be more efficient with manufacturing, instead of having to make cars by hand. Rifling was a firearm innovation for more accurate shots at range. Beforehand, rifles were smoothbore muskets.

Even railroads were an innovative use of steam engines, as before railroads existed in the UK, they were used as pump engines and to power mining cranes and elevators in coal mines.

In all of these examples, these innovations either birthed a new industry, a new process, or was a completely new way of solving an existing problem -- ergo, these things were not mere improvements like you describe for an iPhone.

So, I'm curious . . . does it matter whether a pea-sized piece of rock, zooming along at who knows what speed, hits you - or, does your going near the speed of light and hitting the rock really matter!? We all know how a tiny, fast-moving object can seriously puncture spacecraft and equipment; what would increasing speed accomplish if you run into grain-of-sand particles and have no way to ward off the impact!? I would think engineering efforts would be better suited to protecting what we have, at currently-known speeds, BEFORE going faster - maybe develop some form of forcefield shielding, ala every space movie ever made.

There was the Daedalus project, which never went past the design stage due largely to the fact that it used nuclear propulsion and it was designed at the height of anti-nuclear sentiment in the US. Apparently it would have been able to hit 12% the speed of light, which would have got us to Barnard's Star within 50 years or so.

I have an idea. What about a spacecraft that can use an antimatter reactor to create its own gravity field, and amplify that gravity field in which it can change direction of the said gravity field, to turn right, left, up, down and even hover. I think it will work!

The only way we're gonna see warp drive is if someone from 3000 years in the future accidentally ends up in our time and use us to help them get back to their proper time . I believe that if you concentrate a large amount of photonic radiation at a single point at the molecules molecules in spacetime or heat piercing a hole in the spacetime continue to allow movement through a timestream and then once the radiation is turned off then that whole closes and sills up behind you thus thus appearing at a different space at a different time. That's my thoughts on going somewhere very fast.

I think ion drives show a lot of promise for space travel in the foreseeable future. Warp drive is still a bit too theoretical at this point and, if the physics involved is even possible, the implementation seems like it would be quite dangerous at first. It's not likely that we would see a viable warp drive for many years.

The Alcubierre doesn’t actually break the laws on physics, it simply bends them to ride a wave of warped space-time on one side and compressed one side and and expand it on the other. The craft isn’t actually moving through space, space time is being warped around it so things like time dilation and G forces are not a factor. Something my physics professor taught me. The laws of physics are more like guidelines. Depending on environmental properties they can be bent, broken, expanded, and rewriten they aren't necessarily finite. You can't exist in 2 spaces at once; unless your a quantum particle. Meanwhile around 5.5 years would pass on Earth. Same thing on the way home.

So they would arrive back on Earth around 11 years later. But to them, only had experienced and aged around 2 to 2.5 years.

Inside the space time bubble you wouldn't experience this though. essentially you are removed from a point in time and space and re inserted at another point. No time dilation. If the trip felt like 10minutes, ten relative minutes would have past at the point where you left from and the arrival point. I think.

I seriously doubt any of these warp drives will ever be possible, however if one had a particle generator that accelerated particles in the shape of a torus where particle reached near light speed as they accelerated in the center of the donut and were allowed to slowly return by spiraling around the outside of the donut. The particles in the center would be more massive than the slower particles returning along the longer path.

What happens when you have a solid object that's 1 light year in length and you move the other end. Does the other end move at the same time or does the object warp due to weird time/relativity laws. I have thought about a nuclear powered spacecraft for years. They are capable of much more constant thrust than liquid or solid fuel rockets. While probably not capable of taking of taking off from the surface of earth, it would work quite well in space. At a constant acceleration of 1/2 g, you could reach Mars in about a month.

Achieving light speed is often talked about. For instance; "Traveling at light speed it will take about 4.5 years to reach Alpha Centauri." is a fallacy. Getting to light speed and decelerating from light speed has to be taken into account. For the comfort of the crew the acceleration of the ship would have to replicate the force of gravity on Earth. 9.807m/sec^2.
At that acceleration it would take almost a year to reach light speed and the same amount of time to decelerate from it. That would leave 2.5 years for the crew to suffer all the health problems associated with zero G. The only alternative is to constantly accelerate and decelerate, thus drastically reducing average speed. Conclusion : Unless a faster than light drive is made a reality, man will never become an interstellar species and we are doomed, someday, to extinction.

Recent testing of the EM drive ( not NASA) initially showed thrust , but when they ' changed " the configuration of support points. they could no longer measure thrust and ' theorized ' that it was some sort of thermal heating of the scale . NASA takes these kinds of things into account anyway .

Being able to reach the speed of light is only part of the problem. How long will it take to gradually accelerate to that speed with out the G-force tearing the craft apart or destroying the fragile human body? Say it was able to accelerate such that maintained the effect of 1G on the body. Nice way to simulate gravity, but how long would it take to reach the desired speed? It would also have to slow down at the same rate before reaching its destination.

I’m optimistic that the human race will survive. First by adapting to changes in earth’s climate, and then, in millions or billions of years, developing a way to travel to distant galaxies. But the method of travel will not likely be anything we can imagine today.

Approaching the speed of light is a problem, but then there are many subsequent problems. Two big ones are, that even a micrometeorite that is hit by the ship is like an atomic bomb going off. EM drives were debunked quite some time ago I’m afraid, the minuscule amounts of “impossible” thrust were caused by thermal radiation which isn’t self-sustaining, meaning you’d need fuel/power to continue the effect - defeating the object of the drive.

@edo edo I have no doubt that civilizations kill themselves but I doubt all do or even most. I held a personal theory for years that Mars was once a planet like Earth and I am not alone. It appears that it never was based on current knowledge but knowledge changes. I would not be surprised if we find life on one of the other planets in our solar system. Some of the moons of Jupiter and Saturn are good candidates. We are alone like some remote Islands in the Pacific are alone. But we are not completely alone. I think we will one day communicate with other civilizations but that may be all we do. A conventional signal based on using light waves would take years or decades to send back and forth.

Think about it in terms of historical examples. First recorded flight was 1903 with essentially a paper and wood plane powered by a small engine. Within 42 years we had gone through paper propeller planes that could barely fly to a proper working jet engine. From 1945 to 1990, we made jet engines that could go at supersonic speeds.

In a human lifetime, we went from the very first plane which could barely fly 4 miles to planes that could break the sound barrier and go around the world.

I believe this will continue with space propulsion technology. We're in the first stages of the technology. Just like with the first plane, it took 40 years to drop propellers and make something faster and better. But once that was made, we had found ways to break barriers in the same amount of time after that. I think we'll see 40 years of gradual improvements to this field, one breakthrough to really open the door, and then a series of rapid improvements in the next 40 that break established barriers.

There are many issues with this video, but I want to point out two things: "almost no exotic matter" (or whatever the quote was) still is a MASSIVE problem because we still have absolutely no idea how to procure such stuff.

Also, a warp drive would allow us to push past the speed of light; movement within space time itself is limited by the speed of light, but manipulating space time isn't.

Unless you can find a way to dampen the inertia or something to that effect then near light speed travel is impossible even if you could reach those speed with a craft. The mass would increase to such intense levels it could easily form a black hole. Even if that dose not happen your body would not be living for long. Even if you can live then being able to move due to the lack of time due to such which speeds would cause you to be unable to slow down even if it was programmed into the computer unless you have several light years to slow down so you can have the time to actually do so then you would still die before reaching the planet unless you have hibernation pods so you can live the hundreds of years before you reach your target so you don't overshoot.

The fundamental flaw in propulsion space travel is the devastating effect of impact with material objects which is an insoluble problem. In order to travel to other stars, we need non-propulsion systems. That could be wormholes or some other dimension which we haven't yet discovered which would allow us to find a shortcut. Bro the EM Drive was debugged YEARS ago. There was a lot of hype in the mid 2010s and it was very quickly explained how it "worked" using known physics. It's just that it's so small and difficult to fully shield these experiments properly that a few labs got erroneous results that seemed to break physics. Unfortunately it's just pushing (very weakly) off the earth's magnetic field. A horribly inefficient, non-scalable thing that can only really even be realistically measured VERY close to earth or another massive magnetic field. We can't get anywhere with it. A catapult would for real get you further.

However what if the solar sail had the sun's energy condensed and focused on it? How far from the Sun could the light be focused to exert enough force to accelerate the sail would be a question of engineering. For all we know such pathways of light already exist between stars. At about 1/5th the speed of light it would take 20 years to reach the Centauri system (and four years to receive the first signals from that star system). The Sun can provide all the power needed - giant mirror arrays orbiting the Sun will both condense and focus the limitless energy into a dense beam of photon energy. Something like Dyson spheres - the arrays will cover part of the Sun - they would have to be close to the Sun, but expending enough energy to keep them far enough away from the Sun's surface and blocking the Earth's light) should leave plenty left over.

I'm an aerospace engineer and what I hate (and I really do mean swing a baseball bat hate) about these people is the amount of crap REAL ENGINEERS now have to explain away afterwards. I've just spent YET MORE TIME explaining to people why Jeff Bezos claim of moving all of Earth's heavy industry to low earth orbit is IMPOSSIBLE.

Its pretty simple if you just consider the worlds iron supply which starts with over 3,000,000,000 (3 billion) tons of iron ore that produces around 2,100,000,000 tons of iron & steel. Not only do you have to lift that to orbit but then also bring it back down which requires the equivalent of 150,000,000 (150 million) space shuttle flights a year. AND THAT'S JUST the iron after that is nickel, copper, tin, aluminium, zinc and all the other stuff.

If you're and engineer or other STEM person this garbage is infuriating, but then we have billionaires fuelling a lot of it. Jeff Bezos isn't alone as Elon Musk is even worse and after him are the other tech billionaires and tech conglomerates.

I can comprehend how it works I have an example. You take a weight and slowly and effortlessly you have it go towards the front. You slam hard on it and the vehicle accelerates slightly with the weights drifting again. Depending on the masses, acceleration will be slow but continuous. Also I note the place you're going to is four and a half light years away and you're traveling at light speed time is moving very slowly along with you reducing the travel time experienced by The traveler. If they experience a 2-year trip and return 2 years later according to their time, it will be many many many many years later here. GPS satellites suffer from this. If you have two digital watches that are synchronized perfectly and they hold the synchronization without error for months, independent of each other, taking the one time piece on airplanes that are trains or the space shuttle, you will find the two-time pieces are no longer synchronized. Time moved slower for the timepiece that was moving faster than the time iece that was sitting still. This is happening continuously with GPS satellites and all satellites lose time according to stationary yet orbiting ground time, having a couple of fuel tanks rendezvous for refilling at 86,000 mph plus or minus I don't know waiting for the ship to come to refuel should be no problem for IBM's HAL 9000 to navigate. That this model has never had an error and cannot make a mistake guarantees mission success! And when they return a thousand years later...... Four and a half years their time, how the world will celebrate them? There's free shopping when you get there and all you can eat buffet on the transport ship, you're bound to gain some weight. The engine doesn't need to create a large amount of thrust, an EM engines particles are moving extremely fast, but they're very small and have little thrust. Because the particles are moving extremely fast that means that the max speed is extremely fast too. It might take a while to get up to max speed but WHEEEEW it can move fast at max speed, like 80% of the speed of light fast.

I have pondered this - can an object be at rest relative to the entire rest of the universe? if the universe is infinite in measure, you cannot travel any distance of infinity without being exactly where you started. example would be if you were trying to move your mouse pointer to the edge of the screen but the screen was infinite in measure. As you pan out to infinity - the pointer would appear to stop no matter how "fast" you moved it. The objects in the universe make us believe we are moving, but I am not convinced this is true at all. It's true in the sense that is how we perceive motion and measure it - but maybe not the actual truth about the nature of our reality.

If there was an "edge" to the universe, we would have to ask something like "well what is the universe contained within?" it's weird enough that anything exists when no-thing-at-all makes perfect sense to me... I am pissed about it honestly.
