The first verse of “Shadow Surfer” by 菊池桃子 describes a surfer who is displaying her prized possession - her board, out in the sun. Though she tries to smile, there is a hint of sadness as she looks wistfully out towards the waves, silently acknowledging the gap between where she is now and where she dreams of being as a surfer. This is a somewhat melancholy theme that resonates throughout the song. Despite everything, in her heart, she still holds onto the dream of becoming a great surfer. The second verse sees the surfer catching a break, a moment of “grace on the wave” that leaves her elated. She views each surf session as a chance to take a step closer to achieving her dream, and the knowledge that within a split second, everything could be lost only makes her more determined to succeed.
Further on in the song, the lyrics touch on the idea of competition and rivalry, with the suggestion that the surfer sees the elements themselves, such as wind and waves, as her only true competitors. No matter what life throws her way, she will always return to surfing and the ocean - this is where she belongs.
