Lyrics

Overall Meaning

The song 宿時雨 by 角川博 talks about a woman's emotions on a rainy night in Hakone. She is feeling melancholic and has put on her evening makeup as she waits for a lover to arrive. The 宿時雨 (shukujou) refers to a light rain that falls during the night and lingers until dawn, symbolizing the ephemeral nature of human emotions and relationships. The woman wonders if the rain is showing compassion by crying along with the two people who are suffering from a painful separation. The familiarity of the lover's touch under the yukata is so comforting that she can't help but bite her sleeves in a mixture of pain and pleasure. The gentle 宿時雨 conceals her sighs and provides a sense of serenity in the midst of turmoil. She wishes that she could die together with the lover, burning passionately in the embrace of the Hakone´s night.

The second stanza describes the moment when the woman unties her hair and gently places a strand of black hair around the lover's finger. This act symbolizes the transient beauty of life, and how easily it can slip away. As the night goes on, the 宿時雨 continues to fall outside the window, staining the night with melancholic hues. The woman wishes that if it must rain, it would fall all day long and quench the thirst of the parched earth. This shows her feeling of sadness and the desire to be embraced by nature itself.
