Thanks Kevin :) I'm trying on that windows stuff (it's tough because I don't have one to test with). We filmed a project on green with that new Canon Raw Lite on C70 a couple weeks ago. I'm not a VFX expert but let me take a look and see if I can off some advice in the coming weeks.

Thanks for this great tutorial. I am new to using DiVinci Resolve and downloaded the free v18 to test out and after a rather large 1-week learning curve, I am starting to like it alot. I have been using CuberLink PowerDirector 20 (and 13) which is a pretty good consumer-grade editor but wanted to start using a more professional-grade tool for future editing of video (PD still makes the effort of creating family and church slideshows much easier). I am not a professional videographer (actually a recentlyretired aerospace engineer) but take videos/pictures of family (cell phones), church and my fun hobby diving (GoPro). I like this new video editor and will be using it more in the futue (have recreated 3 past efforts and been tinkering with Fusion scripting). Relative to this post, since I have not created anything in the libraries you referenced (other than a few projects I want to keep), is a clean install for me to the paid studio version simply a backup of my projects and an uninstall followed by a download/install of studeo v18?

What are your initial thoughts on everything we heard yesterday? I didn't see any specific descriptions of enhancements to the Cut or Edit pages, or much focused on Fusion development, but perhaps in is in there and needs some careful exploration to uncover the gems! Love to hear your reaction.

Hi Marc, there are a small handful of improvements but honestly it’s really the cloud service for collaboration that is the headline. I am cutting with it right now in my first project, solo, but with a cloud project library.

I will dig deeper at NAB next week and be sure to let you know best practices or thoughts on the cloud stuff in the coming weeks once I have tested it enough.

1) does the davinci studio 17 license key work with studio 18? Or does it require a upgrade/new license key?

2) does the current studio 18 beta stable enough compared to the latest 17?

3) will the studio 18 beta to studio 18 GA upgrade as smoothly as the 17 dot releases?

great questions - 1, yes same one. 2, I've only used it for a day so I can't give an honest answer - I haven't crashed yet - however the proxy generator can't do it's thing while I edit in the background - it uses all my cores. 3 - I would assume so

If you do super critical work then I would hold off if you can to let others find the issues. But it doesn't appear like a ton has changed aside from the new cloud database model that I'm using as I type this.

No problem Gary, I just switched over to DaVinci Resolve studio at version 15. I came over from Fcpx after 14 years of editing with it. After DR 17 was released, I haven't looked back. Not less a client happens to send me a Fcpx project to edit. Have fun editing

Great job with the video. I returned to the Mac with the MacBook Pro M1, and before was using DR on a PC, and I never uninstalled the app, even the betas. And it all always worked fine. Do you think it's worth it on MacOS?

Thanks for sharing! The M1 is pretty amazing. I personally do this whole clean method on installing major version updates (17 to 18), or to troubleshoot. I think sometimes the preferences can get messed up, but generally I just do the same as and write over the previous versions on smaller iterative updates. I do however suggest getting in the habit of backing up your database. It's simple and painless.

We just install the new versions over the old ones (after backing up the databases).. all settings and preferences carry over to the new version..I think. Why do a clean install instead? You're one of the best DR channels; concise, clear and to the point..and one of few that go a bit deeper than usual..

Hi Chadwick, I'm researching installing Version 18 after uninstalling version 17 when the full version is released. I'm missing the part where I need a password to uninstall the old version and install the new one. I have my Product Key and Serial Number and I understand the rest of your tutorial but I don't know what password I'll need and where to get it. Can you or someone help me understand how this part works?

Hi Bob, I must have mispoken. All you need is that product key or serial number to re-license the software on the new install of the 18 beta.

The only passwords you would need would be operating system related, or to login to the blackmagic cloud beta. Hope this helps.

Why uninstall first? I've used Resolve since 11 and never uninstalled before the next major release/install. Worked fine every time :)

It's not a requirement and I don't do it for small dot incremental updates, but there is always a chance with the bigger updates for things to go wonkey. I would suggest at a minimum to keep a backup of the database file(s).

Anyway of just keep both and running them side by side until it is out of beta? I am still on 17.4.2 and it just works for me. I also have some plugins that do not work beyond that yet? Can I just install 18 in my apps folder and use it with out changing 17? Thanks.

I wish I had waited a day to upgrade so I could have this video. I did backup my database first, but not all of the other settings. The V18 beta is completely bricked and crashes on me with everything I try to do, hovering over an effect in the Effects pane crashes, tracking using the new Magic Mask crashes... I did another uninstall/reinstall but now I'm going to try wiping everything out and starting over following your video. I'm still going to copy the folders you suggest, but if any of them have already been corrupted it might be too late now and I might just have to start over. I'm also going to make sure I have all of my Reactor plugins written down so I can reinstall them too.

@Creative Video Tips Thank you. I sent a crash log to BMD and they got back to me last night. They said the issue is related to a specific set of Intel integrated graphics and I had to roll my drivers back several versions. Everything is working now! Unfortunately, they wrote me after I already scrubbed everything. But at least now I know how to do all of that in the future (I've been using resolve about 3 months). It's probably not a bad idea to start totally fresh with a major update. But since this was so specific, they told me not to recommend this to others as a general fix. When I can grab an RTX 3060ti for close to list price (still $200+) I'm grabbing one. Then I won't have to fight with this POS integrated graphics anymore. 🥲

I'm so sorry you're experiencing some new issues. I would start by not adding any 3rd party plugins and templates and go from there. So far for me the main issue is my machine not being able to balance the proxy generator app with the resolve doing any tasks at the same time.

It's not, but I think it's a good idea. I would at a minimum backup your database file for archival/safety sake. The clean install fixed a bad playback problem I just had on 17.4.6, so hopefully this is helpful if anyone else has future issues.

it really does - I starting testing it this morning and it will likely be the focus of my next video. From what I can tell it is less flexible from the built in proxy generation, but (and a big but) you can have several computers attack a batch at the same time - I would love an option to bake in a 709 correction, and that is missing

The primary reason is to have a fail safe database with your projects to revert to an older version if needed. Once a project is in 18, I'm not sure how easy it will be to go back, especially if you end up using new features. I have found computers in general function much better, as expected, when you're able to start fresh on major upgrades.

Thanks for asking Adrian. I have found that its helpful when you do major upgrades to start clean to avoid any hiccups from any settings files or preferences that might cause issues. V17 to 18 warrants that in my book. It is also a great way to rule out any bugs or other software issues.

Hi Allen, I haven't found this to be the case on the specific library files mentioned in this video. Things like preferences can easily become corrupt and cause issues. It's certainly not a requirement to clean install, but it is a way to make sure you're starting fresh without any issues introduced on the user end.
