The group's members are Kim Jaekyung (김재경), Koh Woori (고우리), Oh Seungah (오승아), No Eul (노을), Jung Yoonhye (정윤혜), Kim Jisook (지숙) and Cho Hyunyoung (조현영), to represent each color of the rainbow.
They debuted in November 2009 with their first mini-album Gossip Girl. In August 2010 they released the digital single A. The dance routine for "A" (in which they lift up their shirts just above their navel) caused controversy when TV station MBC banned it from broadcast for "sexual content". Rainbow released their third single Mach in October 2010, which featured a sexy dominatrix concept.
In April 2011, Rainbow released their second mini-album SO 女, including the single "TO ME (내게로..)", which showcased a more glamorous image than their previous releases. The song was a success, peaking at #4 on Korea's Gaon Singles Chart. In June, a repackaged version of the mini-album was released with a new single "Sweet Dream".
Later that year the group debuted in Japan with a re-release of their Korean hit "A". The single was a success, charting at #3 on the Oricon Weekly Chart and selling more than 24,000 copies in its first week. Soon after it was announced they'd be releasing a new version of "Mach" as their second Japanese single in December of 2011. The single peaked at #9 on the Oricon.
At the start of 2012 Rainbow's first sub-unit, Rainbow Pixie (Hangul: 레인보우 픽시) consisting of members Seungah, Jisook and Hyunyoung released their debut single 호이호이 (Hoi Hoi). In March, the full group came together for the release of their first original Japanese single "GONNA GONNA GO!" ("ガナガナGO!") and debut Japanese album Over the Rainbow.
Following the sub-unit of Rainbow Pixie, Rainbow BLAXX (Hangul: 레인보우 블랙) consisting of members Jaekhyung, Hyunyoung, Seungah, and Woori debuted in January 2014 with the digital single "Cha Cha". The music video for the title track was the fourth-most viewed K-pop music video globally in January 2014. The music video, as well as the song's choreography, drew controversy for being "too sexual".
On February 23, 2015, Rainbow released their third mini-album Innocent along with the title track "Black Swan". The concept was meant to show off Rainbow's more elegant side. They started their promotions for the title track on M! Countdown on February 26. The album peaked at #5 on the Gaon Album Chart.
They later released their fourth mini-album Prism on February 15, 2016. The title track for the mini was "Whoo", a unique, upbeat track. Later in the summer of that year, Rainbow collaborated with Makestar and various photographer to release their first photo book titled "Up Close".
On October 27, 2016, it was confirmed that the members of the group choose not to resign with DSP Media and that Rainbow would be disbanding as their contracts were set to end on November 12. Prior to disbandment, the members went on a farewell trip to Southeast Asia.
