Lyrics

Glitter in the air
Oh won't you wake up
Oh you'd better wake up
Oh won't you wake up
Oh you'd better wake up
Break it now 벗어나
Move your mind mind
Make it shine
Break it now 벗어나
Break it now 벗어나
The song "Labyrinth" depicts a woman's journey through a tangled and confusing maze-like world. She hears sweet whispers calling her towards different directions while glittering things around her lead her astray. The singer is trapped in a labyrinth, unable to find an exit. In the first verse, she implores her shadow to stop chasing her as it seems to want to engulf and eat her. In the second verse, she pleads to be saved from the noise and confusion and instead be left alone. In the chorus, the singer acknowledges the frightening "hurricane" of a world she finds herself in and wants to break free from it. She acknowledges that she knows the truth of who she is, but she does not want to listen to it because it scares her. She implores herself to break free and look in the mirror to "Move your mind mind, Make it shine," before finally breaking free from the shackles of the labyrinth.
The lyrics of "Labyrinth" are a powerful metaphor for the confusion and uncertainty many face in life. The labyrinth represents the feeling of being lost and anxious, while the glittering things and sweet whispers represent the easy traps that can lead people astray. At its core, the song seems to be about facing and overcoming fear to break free from whatever personal struggles the singer may face. The repeated refrain of "Hurricane이야 Hurricane이야" highlights the intensity and urgency of the situation.

Okay, story time:
Earlier this year I decided to take a chance and dive into K-pop after really getting into J-rock last year when I discovered BAND-MAID. They blew me away and I know that I love a good and catchy pop melody in my music. I've always loved metal and rock. I grew up on a lot of what my mom listened to, which was always a female-fronted rock or metal group like Evanescence, Epica, Nightwish, Within Temptation, etc. So I have a huge appreciation for female vocals. I just prefer them over male vocals, but I definitely have a huge selection of bands that have male singers that are awesome too. Anyway, the combination of pop melodies and harmonies mixed with strong rock or metal instrumentation has always been really cool to me. Putting symphonic, electronic, synth, and/or orchestral elements in the mix is even better. Anytime I hear a really good piece of synth or EDM in a song, it reminds me of all kinds of video games I love to play, so it's just an additional plus to me and it just sounds incredibly different than anything else.
I fell into K-pop WAY harder than I thought I would. I first discovered Dreamcatcher back in February, right after their "Odd Eye" comeback. "Piri" was the first song I had heard by them while watching a reaction video to that very song. I don't know what compelled me to watch a reaction video to a group or song I had never heard, but I think it's a good way or avenue to discover new music because you're doing it with someone, even if you don't know them personally. For context, I've never been a big fan of rap at all. It just never suited me and for a while I was unsure about Dreamcatcher because of the rap elements, but eventually, they grew on me. Part of it is me tolerating it, but also the fact that Dami, the main rapper in Dreamcatcher, has such an iconic sounding voice that in no way feels as jarring as American rap does. Additionally, she's rapping with substance without being vulgar, so that's a plus, as I'm not a fan of having a lot of that in my music. All of this applies to Gahyeon as well, since she does rap on a few songs. So, not only did I discover Dreamcatcher and dive into this insanely cool world of K-pop, but I've literally discovered something about myself; that rap, with the right doses, exposition, and sound is actually pretty neat and gives a song depth. I was OBSESSED with Dreamcatcher so much that I even introduced them to my sister and now she's obsessed with them. This was a few months ago as of now and Dreamcatcher has a comeback next Friday and I'm SO excited since it's my first comeback as an InSomnia (their fan name). Dreamcatcher has a lot of unique rock and metal elements in their music, so I gravitated towards them easily.
Continuing on, within the past month, I discovered Everglow. I kind of already "knew" of them because I listened to "Dun Dun" several months ago and wasn't sure if I liked it, but then they had a comeback with their song called "First" and I liked that one, so I jumped into their songs to see more. They are a relatively new group, having debuted in 2019, so they only have about twenty songs. That being said, most of them are awesome. I especially love "La Di Da". I think it's their best title track and one of my favorite songs ever. I love "No Good Reason" as well. So I am definitely a Forever (their fan name) waiting for the next comeback!
Thus, here we are now. I literally kept seeing "MAGO" by GFRIEND everywhere so I decided to try it out. I have a lot of appreciation for the disco/retro theme, hence my previous comments regarding Everglow's "La Di Da". I just think it's a cool theme and interesting era with a lot of colorful outfits and fun music styles. It's kind of cheesy too, but that's the point I think. It's just pure fun. Anyway, I listened to "MAGO" and I enjoyed it, but I was unsure if I really wanted to dive into another girl group right now. Then I was at work the other night and I put my music on and just decided to shuffle play GFRIEND's Spotify. I listened to a lot of their songs and I FELL IN LOVE. They are so catchy, upbeat, beautiful, dynamic, somber, and just... I'm so glad I found them. This song, "Labyrinth", is just SO GOOD. It hypes me up hardcore.
Now, the worst part about all of this is that, while I just discovered GFRIEND and love their music, I soon realized that they just disbanded like two months ago as of the posting of this comment. So while I have a lot of great music to listen to and I'm certainly a Buddy, I'll never be able to witness a comeback of theirs since they are done. Unless of course something crazy happens and they come back. I'm not sure how the K-pop industry works with contracts and all that.
All of this to say, I fell into the K-pop rabbit hole and I haven't crawled out and I don't want to. I'm an InSomnia, a Forever, and a Buddy! This entire community is awesome and I love it. I am so interested in the culture of Korea that I have legitimately considered learning Korean. I have always enjoyed linguistics and etymology anyway, and learning a new language would be cool. Anyway, this has been long-winded, but yeah.
So that's my story.
