New Horizons
Flyleaf Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

So you're tired but you're alive
So open up your eyes
And you can get some sleep when you are dead
Kill the clock inside your head
Bring your normalcy to the edge
And watch it drown in new horizons
New horizons
You said I'd only have to wait until I died
And that's no time
How did we come to think that this was funny
Cheering and laughing at the dying
While we've been riding the light in you

Wait
You said I'd only have to wait until I die
(New horizons)
There is no such thing as time
Inside this moment no sun rising
Wait until I fly
(New horizons)
Wait until I fly
(New horizons)

Sin with a conquest
Life floods in with a new quest
Here's a voice for the voiceless
And a song for the soulless
Life floods in

Wait
You said I'd only have to wait until I die
(New horizons)
There is no such thing as time
Inside this moment no sun rising
Wait until I fly
(New horizons)
Wait until I fly
(New horizons)

When the times keep going wrong and we go right
When the times keep going wrong and we go right

Wait
You said I'd only have to wait until I die
(New horizons)
There is no such thing as time
Inside this moment no sun rising
Wait until I fly
(New horizons)
Wait until I fly
(New horizons)

Wait until I fly
(New horizons)
There is no such thing as time
Inside this moment no sun rising
Wait until I fly

When the times keep going wrong and we go right
We go right

Overall Meaning

"New Horizons" by Flyleaf is a song about taking life one day at a time and embracing change. The lyrics encourage the listener to let go of the past, bring their "normalcy to the edge" and "watch it drown in new horizons". The song begins by acknowledging the struggle of feeling tired and bogged down by the responsibilities of life. However, the lyrics quickly remind the listener that there is plenty of time to rest after they're dead. The line "kill the clock inside your head" encourages the listener to let go of their worries and enjoy the present moment.

The song then shifts its focus to the idea of time. The lyrics state that there is "no such thing as time" and that we should live in the moment. They criticize people who find it funny to cheer and laugh at the dying, while also acknowledging that life is fleeting and we should make the most of the time we have. The song ends with the repeated phrase "wait until I fly", suggesting that the listener will eventually find their own "new horizons" and take off into a new chapter of their life.

Overall, "New Horizons" encourages the listener to embrace change and live in the moment. It acknowledges the struggle of navigating life's ups and downs, but ultimately encourages a positive attitude towards the future.

Lacey came to speak at my school a while back - I can honestly say I don't think I've ever met someone as beautiful on the inside as they are on the outside. I got to speak with her for a moment afterwards and she just... felt real. Amazing moment, amazing artist.

I love the fact that Lacey, one of the biggest hard rock voices of a generation, can look and sound just as hardcore in a sundress. She dances like a child and sings with a voice that cannot be matched. Her songs have a wicked sound but always such heartwarming meaning. She is sheer contradiction in all she does. I love it.

Very well put.

It's very rare for bands to outright address in such an intimate way whenever a member leaves, death is one thing, yes...but when a member has to leave usually no one sees it coming. Lacey had planned this it seems though and with her band made a beautiful video that looks to a brand new chapter in her life. Best of luck to her family.
