Handsome
The Vaccines Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Oh God, oh God, oh God, oh God
Oh God, oh God, oh God, oh God
Oh, eat me up for breakfast
You think you look good in whatever they sugar coat you in
And my body is a temple, you can worship at my feet
But I might kick you in the teeth so
So even when you're spitting blood
You would savor that for me

'Cause I got so down I held the world for ransom
Lonely, bored and bad, thank God I'm handsome, so handsome

I know, I know, I know, I know, I know, I know
I know I should be pickin' up the pieces
But it doesn't really matter, it's what you thought it were
When you got nothin' to lose
Everybody else I know, it sucks to be in misery
As if it was contagious
So come to me and promise me you'll
Catch me if you can

'Cause I got so down I held the world for ransom
Lonely, bored and bad, thank God I'm handsome
I'm as awful as they come, oh, what a pity
So thank the Lord above that I am pretty, so pretty
So pretty
So pretty

Well, I got so down I held the world for ransom
Lonely, bored and bad, thank God I'm handsome
Arresting, repossessing and disarming
Oh, what a stroke of luck that I am charming

Well, I heard that I am wanted by committee
I just thank the Lord above that I am pretty, so pretty

Overall Meaning

In The Vaccines's song Handsome, the lyrics express a sense of self-aggrandization and confidence, juxtaposed with themes of loneliness and misery. The repeated refrain of "Oh God" serves as a sort of prayer or plea for the singer to be noticed and appreciated. The lyrics also contain references to the singer’s physical appearance, describing their handsomeness and charm as a saving grace. The lines "my body is a temple, you can worship at my feet / But I might kick you in the teeth so / So even when you're spitting blood / You would savor that for me," capture the sense of power that comes with physical attractiveness, with the singer able to both attract and harm others. Overall, the song seems to suggest that physical appearance can be a means of escaping or transcending one's problems, while also acknowledging the superficiality of this perspective.

Just saw them live in Santa Ana about 5 hours ago... Best night of my life so far! They gave an amazing live show, I can't believe they're not that popular here in the U.S. They threw out a bunch of drum sticks and other things (even Freddie's sweaty towel..), were great with connecting to the audience, and I swear Justin smiled at me multiple times since I was not even 15 feet away from him (ain't gonna lie, it made me swoon inside). This band is one of my favourites ever and I can't wait to get to see them whenever they come back!!
