Don't Cry For Me Argentina
'Madonna Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴
When I try to explain how I feel
That I still need your love after all that I've done
You won't believe me
All you will see is a girl you once knew
Although she's dressed up to the nines
At sixes and sevens with you
I had to let it happen, I had to change
Couldn't stay all my life down at heel
Looking out of the window, staying out of the sun
So I chose freedom
Running around, trying everything new
But nothing impressed me at all
I never expected it to
Don't cry for me, Argentina
The truth is I never left you
All through my wild days
My mad existence
I kept my promise
Don't keep your distance
And as for fortune, and as for fame
I never invited them in
Though it seemed to the world they were all I desired
They are illusions
They are not the solutions they promised to be
The answer was here all the time
I love you and hope you love me
Don't cry for me, Argentina
Don't cry for me, Argentina
The truth is I never left you
All through my wild days
My mad existence
I kept my promise
Don't keep your distance
Have I said too much?
There's nothing more I can think of to say to you
But all you have to do is look at me to know
That every word is true
"Don't Cry For Me Argentina" is a powerful ballad from the musical "Evita" and was later performed by Madonna for the film adaptation. The song is sung from the perspective of Eva Perón, the former First Lady of Argentina, who addresses the people and her lover, explaining her motivations and feelings.
In the first verse, Eva acknowledges that trying to explain her emotions and the need for love after all she has done may be difficult for others to understand. She acknowledges that people may still see her as the same girl they once knew, even though she has transformed herself and her life has become complicated. She had to let certain things happen and make changes in her life, realizing that she couldn't stay in a disadvantaged position forever. She chose freedom and tried different things, but nothing impressed her as much as she expected.
The chorus, "Don't cry for me Argentina, the truth is I never left you," is Eva's plea to the people of Argentina to not pity her or mourn her absence because she never truly left them. Despite her wild past and tumultuous existence, she promises that she has kept her promise to the people and wants them to not distance themselves from her. She expresses that she never sought fortune or fame, even though it may have seemed that way to the world. Instead, she believes that these things are just illusions and not the solutions they promised to be. She affirms that the answer to her happiness was always there with the people of Argentina and her love for them.
In the final verse, Eva wonders if she has revealed too much about herself, but feels that there is nothing more she can say to make her point. She suggests that by simply looking at her, one can see that every word she has spoken is true.

It won't be easy, you'll think it strange

@NotCrazyLimitedEdition
Evita was by far Madonna’s best vocal work. Never before or after did we see her sing like that.
@leah6488
I actually only watched the movie a few days ago, and I feel the same way. I feel like It was one of the best musicals I have ever seen.

She wanted to prove she could do something different and worked hard at that. Too bad she never found another project to sustain that level of artistry. But it's similar to Diana Ross, in that she did one great movie ("Lady Sings the Blues") and declined in terms of her movie roles after that.
@mulliganstew72
She blew her vocals for this role. Her passion is second to none.
