Don't Look Back In Anger
(Acoustic) Oasis Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Slip inside the eye of your mind
Don't you know you might find
A better place to play
You said that you'd never been
But all the things that you've seen
Will slowly fade away

So I start a revolution from my bed
'Cause you said the brains I had went to my head.
Step outside, summertime's in bloom
Stand up beside the fireplace
Take that look from off your face
You ain't ever gonna burn my heart out

And so Sally can wait, she knows it's too late as we're walking on by
Her soul slides away, but don't look back in anger I heard you say

Take me to the place where you go
Where nobody knows if it's night or day
But please don't put your life in the hands
Of a Rock n Roll band
Who'll throw it all away

I'm gonna start a revolution from my bed
'Cause you said the brains I had went to my head
Step outside 'cause summertime's in bloom
Stand up beside the fireplace
Take that look from off your face
'Cause you ain't ever gonna burn my heart out

So Sally can wait, she knows it's too late as she's walking on by
My soul slides away, but don't look back in anger I heard you say

So Sally can wait, she knows it's too late as we're walking on by
Her soul slides away, but don't look back in anger I heard you say

So Sally can wait
She knows it's too late as she's walking on by
My soul slides away
But don't look back in anger
Don't look back in anger
I heard you say

Overall Meaning

"Don't Look Back in Anger" is a song by the English rock band Oasis. The song is widely considered as one of the band's greatest songs and is often regarded as a defining track of the Britpop era. The song was written by Oasis's guitarist and primary songwriter, Noel Gallagher. The song is a mid-tempo ballad featuring acoustic guitar and piano. Lyrically, the song is about letting go of the past and moving on from the bitterness of previous conflicts. The famous line "So Sally can wait" is thought to reference The Beatles' "She's Leaving Home".

The opening lines of the song, "Slip inside the eye of your mind, don't you know you might find a better place to play", suggest a release from the present moment to an inner space where one can explore new possibilities. The singer is urging the listener to escape from the mundane reality and seek a better place, perhaps in their mind. The phrase "Don't look back in anger" is repeated throughout the song, emphasizing the importance of forgiving and moving on from past difficulties. This line arguably represents the core message of the song: a plea to let go of anger and resentment and to find peace in one's heart.

The song's chorus is particularly catchy, with its opening line "So Sally can wait, she knows it's too late as we're walking on by" creating a sense of nostalgia and bittersweet reflection. The song's musical arrangement, which features a lush string section and a soaring chorus, adds to the melancholic mood. Overall, "Don't Look Back in Anger" is a timeless classic that continues to resonate with listeners across generations.

I was 14 when this song came out, we had to wait hours just to see this vid on MTV, we had no internet. I found the lyrics on a magazine, I ripped the page and put it on the wall, it was golden to me. We used to sing their songs while coming home from school. We didn't know but it was the best fckin time of our lives, thank you Oasis for growing up with us.

It's like these guys captured the soul of The Beatles and updated it to the 90's. They're one of the most awesome bands ever. When you listen to an Oasis song it's like they're completely in charge of your emotions.

@ARHemant

Noel Gallaghar says he doesn't understand these lyrics himself: "I get the odd night when I'm halfway through Don't Look Back In Anger when I say to myself 'I still don't know what these words mean!' I'm thinking what the... what the... 'stand up beside the fireplace'. Why? And all these kids will be singing it at the top of their voices with all their arms around each other and I kind of feel like stopping and going, 'Look, can somebody help me out here? Am I missing something?'" Epic!
