Line Of Fire
(Elementary) Junip Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
If it all came back to you?
Each crest of each wave
Bright as lightning
What would you say
If you had to leave today?
Leave everything behind
Standing on higher ground
When you hear the sounds
You realize its just the wind
And you notice it matters who and what you let under your skin
If put to the test
Would you step back from the line of fire?
Hold everything back
All emotion set aside it
Convince yourself
Someone else
Hide from the world
Your lack of confidence
What you choose to believe in
Takes you as you fall
Takes you as you fall
No one else around you
No one to understand you
No one to hear your calls
Look through all your dark corners
You're backed up against the wall
Step back from the line of fire
What would you do
If it all came back to you?
Each crest of each wave
Bright as lightning
Do the same as you
What you choose to believe in
Takes you as you fall
No one else around you
No one to understand you
No one to hear your calls
Look through all your dark corners
You're backed up against the wall
Step back from the line of fire
The lyrics of "Line of Fire" by Junip question what one would do if everything they have done in life, every choice they've made, every mistake, every success, came back to them. The imagery is vivid as the waves crash back at the shore, and the lightning makes everything visible. It asks what would be done if we had to leave everything behind and just move on. When we feel like we're shining or have the highest status, we should step back and start to evaluate who we allow under our skin.
The song suggests that we convince ourselves that somebody else is responsible for our lack of confidence, and we hide away from the world. The important factor is what we choose to believe in and how we respond when we fall. When nobody else can hear our calls or understand our perspective, we must step back and take a break to evaluate our surroundings. We must look through all of our dark corners and accept the choices we made, good or bad. The song ends with a repetition of the opening lines, as if to reinforce the notion that the only constant is ourself, and we must choose how to respond to the challenges life throws our way.

This song reminds me of a trip to Morocco some time ago. I went alone, traveling sidewalks and taking endless buses, it made me feel so nostalgic, yet so powerful. It made me realize that everything is gonna be fine as long as stay true to myself, alone or in company. And it made think that for now, I am better off alone.

Your testimony helped me think differently about the song. I listened and read the lyrics and the lesson I took from her was "if I could ..." and "calm down, you can still do right."

Well said...sometimes powerful feelings comes from walking/ being alone...
Nothing wrong with that. We will die alone. That hopefully will be the most powerful feeling in the world.
