Milky Way
(Loudness) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

A million stars above me
Only one life to count them all
A thousand years of wishes for a simple man
Milky Way

Look as far as the eye can see
Try, if you can, to understand
I'm just a man of a planet in a galaxy
Milky Way

** We are children of the universe
We are the first
One by one we seek to reach the stars
The future's ours

People are people
We all live to play this game
We turn on the wheel by stairways to the stars
Milky Way

** Repeat

* Repeat
Milky Way

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to Loudness’ Milky Way speak to the vastness of the universe and the insignificance of the individual, but also the power of human curiosity and perseverance. The opening lines “a million stars above me, only one life to count them all” highlight the immensity of the universe and the impossibility of ever truly comprehending it all in one lifetime. The following lines “a thousand years of wishes for a simple man, Milky Way” continue this theme of the vastness of time and space, suggesting that even a thousand years of wishing is not enough to understand the complexities of the universe.

However, the song quickly moves from this sense of futility to a celebration of human determination to explore and understand the universe. The lines “we are children of the universe, we are the first, one by one we seek to reach the stars, the future’s ours” suggest that despite our smallness and limitations, humans have an innate drive to explore and push the boundaries of what is possible. The final lines “people are people, we all live to play this game, we turn on the wheel by stairways to the stars, Milky Way” further reinforces this idea that humans are driven by a desire to explore and understand the mysteries of the universe, and that this is a fundamental aspect of human nature.

I don't know if you know this song, but your comment reminded me of it, so I thought I'd share.

The Galaxy Song

Whenever life gets you down, Mrs. Brown,
And things seem hard or tough,
And people are stupid, obnoxious or daft,
And you feel that you've had quite eno-o-o-o-o-ough,
Just remember that you're standing on a planet that's evolving
And revolving at 900 miles an hour.
It's orbiting at 19 miles a second, so it's reckoned,
The sun that is the source of all our power.
Now the sun, and you and me, and all the stars that we can see,
Are moving at a million miles a day,
In the outer spiral arm, at 40, 000 miles an hour,
Of a galaxy we call the Milky Way.
Our galaxy itself contains a hundred billion stars;
It's a hundred thousand light-years side to side;
It bulges in the middle sixteen thousand light-years thick,
But out by us it's just three thousand light-years wide.
We're thirty thousand light-years from Galactic Central Point,
We go 'round every two hundred million years;
And our galaxy itself is one of millions of billions
In this amazing and expanding universe.
Our universe itself keeps on expanding and expanding,
In all of the directions it can whiz;
As fast as it can go, at the speed of light, you know,
Twelve million miles a minute and that's the fastest speed there is.
So remember, when you're feeling very small and insecure,
How amazingly unlikely is your birth;
And pray that there's intelligent life somewhere out in space,
'Cause there's bugger all down here on Earth!

@xtevetyler5332

and why wouldnt we already know these things, lol
ok here are my 5 items..

1. thè galaxy is actually a lot bigger and expansive than we actually thought it was
2. the galaxy is not just within the Virgo cluster it actually belongs to a much larger structure called Laniakea that is half a billion ly in diameter
3. the sun is actually closer to the central core of the galaxy than usually depicted, seems we underestimated medium distance objects the nearby ones we used parallax to estimate and the very distant measurements we use red shift to estimate, both methods are seemingly accurate, however its the medium distances we used assumed brightness of known stars (the standard candle) to estimate and it seems we got that slightly wrong and thus things at such medium distances were over estimated, and so the distance to the centre of our galaxy is less than previously assumed.
4. our star has only made 18 orbits of the galaxy since it's birth.
5. the spiral arms are simply waves that pass around the galaxy similarly to the way waves travel over the oceans, the actual water slowly ebbs as the tides, but waves are rising and falling crests, the galaxy has such similar waves that pass around the structure far faster than the stars are. we are about to experience the next wave pass through this region, as it does the magnetic poles will shift and finally swap n to s and the stars will flare up increasly as this dust laden electrostatic wave passes by, it's effects will be felt for the next 1000 years or so (it's why we are seeing most of the recent environmental changes and the same is happening throughout the entire solar system, last time this occurred was the younger dryas epoch).
enjoy

@Factstron

Hello guys! Thanks for finding out the mistake.
Yeah the Milky way is actually 13.61 billion years old not 12.7 billion. Thank you all for pointing out!

@TheOofedMood

İ knew that.

@ms9340

Well in the source that YOU linked said 12.5 billion... if thats so wrong i bet everything in this bs video is wrong

@karbonnsmart

There's a second, potential, mistake. Thanks to the World Science Festival allowing the team to bring it to light, it is now believed that the centre of the Milky Way has two black holes, one of which lost the dance of death and the galaxy it brought with it to complete our own. By the time they become one it's probable our Sun will have died by then. Pretty cool though. :)

@amptunes

The real number is 13.765 billion and 22 seconds.

@stefanschleps8758

Thank you so much. I really appreciate these cosmic facts. All the best to you.

@Andrew-zq3ip

Finally someone said what the speed is relative to.

@alexandrudanciu7874

Yeah, he said that the galaxy travel with 100/1 ratio to the speed of light (microw.background radiation)

@nobiazcustomsinc5030

but by saying miles per second isnt that enough? i dont understand

@lexluke2720

@@nobiazcustomsinc5030 well no, because if you are traveling beside a car and you are both going 100 mph and you take a police speed checker gun (idk what they are called) and check the speed of the car it will be going 0 mph because the gun and the car are going the same speed, if you are standing still and check it as it goes by it will be going 100 mph, and if you are traveling in the opposite direction at 100 mph and measure its speed it will be going 200 mph. Its relativity, its kinda confusing and weird sometimes.
