I used to work in the lobby of a police station where there was only one exit. The windows surrounding us were supposedly bulletproof, but were never tested. I was fearful that something like this would happen at some point. They allowed the homeless to sleep in the lobby, and as a dispatcher we were required to do the prisoner checks even though there was usually an officer in the building at all times except under high pressure situations. My life was at risk everyday I worked until we moved to a new building.

They cared nothing for our safety, and never would have unless we moved. A huge project of gang members lived directly across from the department behind a dilapidated shopping mall. Shots fired nightly. We were expected to park in front of the PD at night with no escort. It was like playing Russian Roulette with your life every time you went to work. 🤦‍♀️

​@@KL-xe5ec She's likely telling the truth. It's a staffing issue, some detainees have to be held in single cells and must be checked at certain times. That doesn't mean she had to go into the cell but look through the window and verify they're alive and initial the sheet saying that they were checked/counted. It's not a big deal and not dangerous as this can be done by any staff member. The problem she had with it was that it wasn't her job duty, and it's annoying especially when the detainees (there are no inmates or prisoners in police stations so I do call BS on her choice of words there) start asking her questions and requesting stuff when she walks by their door. So, it was annoying, not dangerous.

When I worked as an RN, in North Carolina, I was in triage, and a woman came in at about three in the morning, and holding a 357 magnum pistol in her hand by her side. she just stood there, staring at me, and I was really waiting for the end, but suddenly she pointed the gun at her own head. my friend, the charge nurse, who’d been in the military, jumped her before anything else happened. I honestly could not stand up from my chair. all the strength in my legs was gone, from the pure anxiety of the situation. They took her to the psych ward, and it took me about 10 minutes before I could walk. I was literally paralyzed by fear.

This same police department suffered the tragic loss of an officer and serious injury of another during what can only be described as an ambush not too many months ago, in a response to a house just a few minutes away from the house I grew up in. If you look up the incident. The woman had come from a bar and wanted to die by police suicide. They booked her on many counts, took her to hospital for evaluation. Went to court next day, was released and due back in court Oct 17. Geez. What could possibly go wrong from now till then. 😢🤯

They didn’t shoot her immediately because they didn’t have a line of sight on her. They aren’t going to push an open door with no cover if she’s actively shooting. Then they got confirmation that she no longer had the gun in her hands, and thats when they pushed forward and got her into custody
