Lady Marmalade
(featuring Patti LaBelle) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Hey sister, go sister, soul sister, go sister
Hey sister, go sister, soul sister, go sister

He met marmalade down in old new orleans
Struttin' her stuff on the street
She said "hello
Hey joe, you wanna give it a go?" mmm, mmm
Itchi gitchi ya ya da da
Itchi gitchi ya ya here
Mocha-choca-lata ya ya
Creole lady marmalade

Voulez-vous coucher avec moi ce soir?
Voulez-vous coucher avec moi?

He sat in her boudoir while she freshened up
The boy drank all her magnolia-wine
On the black satin sheets oh I swear he started to freak

Itchi gitchi ya ya da da
Itchi gitchi ya ya here
Mocha-choca-lata ya ya
Creole lady marmalade

Voulez-vous coucher avec moi ce soir?
Voulez-vous coucher avec moi?

Hey, hey, hey
Touching her skin feelin' silky smooth
The colour of cafe au lait
Made the savage beast inside
Roar until it cried, more, more, more

Now he's back home doing nine to five
Living his grey flannel life
But when he turns off to sleep
Old memories creep, more, more, more

Itchi gitchi ya ya da da da
Itchi gitchi ya ya here
Mocha-choco-lata ya ya
Creole lady marmalade

Voulez-vous coucher avec moi ce soir?
Voulez-vous coucher avec moi?
Voulez-vous couchez avec moi ce soir?
Creole lady marmalade

Voulez-vous coucher avec moi ce soir?
Voulez-vous coucher avec moi?
Voulez-vous couchez avec moi ce soir?
Voulez-vous coucher avec moi?
Voulez-vous couchez avec moi ce soir?
Voulez-vous coucher avec moi?
Voulez-vous couchez avec moi ce soir?
Voulez-vous coucher avec moi?

Itchi gitchi ya ya da da

Overall Meaning

"Lady Marmalade" is a song that was originally written in French by Bob Crewe and Kenny Nolan. The English version, sung by Christina Aguilera, Lil' Kim, Mya, and Pink, and featuring Patti LaBelle's famous vocal ad-libs, was released in 2001 as a part of the Moulin Rouge! movie soundtrack. The song tells a story of a sensual encounter between the singer, Joe, and a Creole prostitute named Marmalade he meets on the streets of New Orleans.

The song starts by introducing Marmalade and her sisters, who are soulful and confident. Joe meets Marmalade on the street, and she invites him to spend the night. When they get to her boudoir, he drinks all her magnolia-wine, and things start getting heated. The chorus uses a mix of French and English phrases to describe Marmalade's seductions. She asks Joe if he wants to sleep with her, and things get more passionate from there. The second verse describes how Joe is still thinking about Marmalade when he goes back to his regular life. The chorus repeats, and the song ends on a sultry chant of "Itchi gitchi ya ya da da..."

Fantastical RandomIrishman I'm just saying that this song is 1000x better than Bang Bang. Bang Bang is good compared to today's pop music, but this song is AWESOME.
