Atmosphere
(r) Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

I see the club for them it's good
I can't take it
Hear the track for them it's nice
I can't dance with it
See you giving me some grams
I can't smell it
A frozen fire in a lake
That's what I feel

People are cursing
Everywhere liqour splashing through
Making out in front of me
The things I just couldn't do
So take it all because

I'm gonna get out of here
Out of this atmosphere
Fly, immediately
Jesus, You're my Savior
You had come to save me
Odds are great in Your majesty so
I'm gonna get out of here
Out of this atmosphere
Fly, immediately

I see a different kind of thing
Even before we came here
We've got different likes
I hope you get it right
I'm not saying I'm in bars
I instead am free
Free from all those things
The snake would like to see

People are cursing
Everywhere liqour splashing through
Making out in front of me
The things I just couldn't do
So take it all because

I'm gonna get out of here
Out of this atmosphere
Fly, immediately
Jesus, You're my Savior
You had come to save me
Odds are great in Your majesty so
I'm gonna gonna get out of here
Out of this atmosphere
Fly, immediately

Jesus, You are my Savior
Jesus, You died for me
Jesus, You are my Savior
Jesus, You died for me
Jesus, You are our Savior
Jesus, You died for us
Jesus, You are our Savior
Jesus, You died for us

I'm gonna get out of here
Out of this atmosphere
Fly, immediately
Jesus, You're my Savior
You had come to save me
Odds are great in Your majesty so
I'm gonna gonna get out of here
Out of this atmosphere
Fly, immediately

Jesus, You are my Savior
Jesus, You died for me

Jesus, You are our Savior
Jesus, You died for us

Overall Meaning

The song "Atmosphere" by (r) speaks of the feeling of discomfort and alienation when in a club or party environment that does not align with one's values and beliefs. The singer in the song is unable to enjoy the music, smell the drugs that are being passed around, or even participate in the social activities around them. They describe the scene as loud, chaotic, and immoral, with people cursing, drinking, and making out in front of them. The singer then turns to Jesus, calling Him their Savior and expressing their desire to get out of that atmosphere and fly immediately. They end the song by repeating the phrase "Jesus, You are my Savior/You died for me" with an added line of "You are our Savior/You died for us."

The song explores themes of alienation, discomfort, and the search for meaning and purpose. The singer is portrayed as someone who does not fit into the stereotypical party scene and instead pursues a more spiritual and meaningful existence. Through the use of religious imagery and language, the song shows the power of faith in providing comfort and a sense of belonging. The repetition of the phrase "Jesus, You are my Savior" highlights the singer's reliance on their faith to navigate this world and find meaning in it.

Since everyone is sharing their own first listening to slug and atmosphere stories, I'll share mine.

It was 2009, I was deployed to Iraq. I went through a hip-hop discovery during that time period. I would download music while I was away on missions and listen to what I downloaded when I returned.

I discovered Common, Nas, and some others.

I went onto a forum for good conscious hip-hop and someone recommended Atmosphere.

That night I downloaded their popular songs on iTunes and when I returned from a mission the next day, I gave them a listened

Holy shit, I was blown away. The Lucy Ford EP's was my shit during that period. Been a fan ever since.

I remember the first time I heard slug I was on the bus on my way to school (first week of 9th grade). Him and his music has remained a staple in my life and has been the tune in my head over a lot of phases of my life (losing my dad, sobriety, breakup, love, and everything inbetween) I’m so grateful he never put his music on the back burner although it’d be easy to do has he’s a husband and father. Thank you slug. I turn 30 next year and look forward to the new memories I’ll make listening to your songs ❤️

Man, I can relate to your comment so much. I'm a few years older but the rest I can definitely feel. Just celebrated 20 years of sobriety and Atmosphere has been with me for the whole ride. I lost my dad in 2014 and "yesterday" from life gives you 🍋 connects with me even more now. It's like no matter what life throws at you, Atmosphere has a song for you.
