Confined
*As I Lay Dying Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

That night
I never came home
Wandering souls captured
My thoughts
Emptiness
Filled my mind
Urgency
Spoke her lies
In the confines
Of these, grey walls
I watched them
Move together
Taking me places
I cannot, remember (remember)
We have been, poured out
Into this loveless bride

How quickly I forget
That this is meaningless
How quickly I forget
(How quickly I forget)
That this is meaningless
(That this is meaningless)

In a world
Passing through
My fingers
I still chase the wind

How quickly I forget
That this is meaningless
How quickly I forget
(How quickly I forget)
That this is meaningless
(That this is meaningless)

What have I learned from yesterday
What have I learned from yesterday

Overall Meaning

The lyrics to As I Lay Dying's song "Confined" describe a feeling of being lost and trapped within one's own thoughts and surroundings. The opening line, "That night I never came home," suggests a sense of disorientation and a loss of place and belonging. The singer's thoughts are filled with emptiness and urgency, and he is unable to escape the confines of his surroundings - the "grey walls" that seem to be closing in on him.

The second verse describes the feeling of being swept up by outside forces that are beyond the singer's control. He watches as others move together, taking him places that he cannot remember. This suggests a sense of being carried along by the currents of life and losing sight of one's own agency and purpose. The final lines about being "poured out into this loveless bride" add a sense of hopelessness and despair.

The chorus adds another layer of meaning to the song, with the repeated lines "How quickly I forget that this is meaningless." This suggests a sense of nihilism or existential despair, with the singer feeling as though his life has no purpose or significance. The final line, "What have I learned from yesterday," suggests a search for meaning and a desire to find something of value in the experiences of the past.

Ah I had this CD when it released and my twin used to play the guitar with his amp cranked to max and I had no mic at the time and would just scream as loud as I could with this playing in the background in an old CD player. I don't think the neighbors appreciated it every morning haha. RIP Chris, miss you bro
