Come On Eileen

Come on Eileen
Come on Eileen

Poor old Johnny Ray
Sounded sad upon the radio
But he moved a million hearts in mono
Our mothers cried, sang along, who'd blame them
You're grown (so grown up)
So grown (so grown up) now I must say more than ever
Come on Eileen
Too ra loo ra too ra loo rye aye
And we can sing just like our fathers

Come on Eileen, oh I swear (what he means)
At this moment, you mean everything
You in that dress, my thoughts I confess
Verge on dirty
Ah, come on Eileen

Come on Eileen

These people 'round here
Wear beat down eyes sunk in smoke dried faces
They're resigned to what their fate is
But not us, (no never) no not us (no never)
We are far to young and clever
Remember Too ra loo ra too ra loo rye aye
And you'l hum this tune forever

Come on Eileen oh I swear (what he means)
Ah come on lets, take off everything
That pretty red dress, Eileen (tell him yes)
Ah come on lets, ah come on Eileen
That pretty red dress, Eileen (tell him yes)
Ah come on lets, ah come on Eileen, please

Come on Eileen too rye aye
Come on Eileen too rye aye
Now you're full grown
Now you have shown
Oh, Eileen

Said, come on Eileen
These things they are real and I know
How you feel
Now I must say more than ever
Things round here have changed
I say, too ra loo ra, too ra-loo rye aye

Come on Eileen
Oh, I swear (what he means)
At this moment, you mean everything
You in that dress, my thoughts I confess
Verge on dirty
Aah, come on Eileen

Oh, come on Eileen
Oh, I swear (what he means)
At this moment, you mean everything
In that dress, oh my thoughts I confess
Well, they're dirty
Come on Eileen

Come on Eileen oh (what he means)
Oh ah come on (everything)

Oh believe me if for losing and dearing your chose
That I gazed on so firmly today

Where to side of will leave you were flying the night
Just like fairy gifts gone in the sky

Overall Meaning

The song “Come on Eileen” by Dexys Midnight Runners tells the story of a young man who is madly in love with a girl named Eileen. In the opening lines, the singer mentions Johnny Ray, a 1950s pop star who moved hearts with his music. The singer then goes on to say that Eileen means everything to him at this moment, as she stands before him in a pretty red dress. He admits that his thoughts verge on dirty, but his love for her is undeniable.

The second verse describes the people in their town as having beat-down eyes and resigned expressions on their “smoke dried faces”. But the singer and Eileen are young and clever, and they refuse to give in to their fate. The repeated verses of “Too ra loo ra too ra loo rye aye” are reminiscent of an Irish folk tune, and this is no coincidence – the band was heavily influenced by Irish music. The song ends with the singer asking Eileen to come to him, telling her that everything he’s said is real and that he loves her.

This was my little sister's favorite song. I was in college when my dad called me late at night and told me to come home immediately. As I drove, I prayed harder than I've ever prayed, begging God that it not be her, but ... she was already gone, killed by a drunk driver at just 15 years of age. Susan was the sweetest, friendliest, most fun-loving girl on the planet, and she was robbed of a beautiful long life. They say that time heals all wounds, but 40+ years later it just isn't true. For years this song brought horribly sad memories, but now at age 63, I find strange comfort in the tune.

Music is the universal language, doesn't matter where you come from or who you are. If it resonates with your soul you were meant to hear it 😊🙏
