Why was what taught? I'm not sure I understand your question. Did you think the Flat Earth model was taught in schools in the 1930s? Because I don't think that's true. If I'm not mistaken, the US public education system taught the Heliocentric Model right from the start. At any rate, the US education is not exactly perfect, as many teachers will tell you. Even if they were teaching this, that would just mean they were woefully misrepresenting the scientific literature. If you'd like to learn more about he Bible says on cosmology vs what people say it says, there are good videos on this channel and that of Ben Stanhope. The ancient Jews depicted the world as a dome of air between water above and below, held up by pillars. There's some debate on how literally they understood this to be true. At any rate, they didn't have access to advanced scientific knowledge, and they weren't trying to write a science manual.

It’s always so annoying to see atheists and fundamentalist Christians emphasize the Bible to such a literal extreme when they realize that almost NO ONE in the ancient world read the Bible this way. Also looking at the cultural context would really help clear up a lot of these issues if they would just stop and look at it with fresh eyes. Like trying to argue on what earth shape is based on an ancient writing....that just pure insanity lol. If someone want to know earth earth shape is....well...just look at earth. We freaking live on it and have all the luxury to analyze it, measure it, observe it. Anyone can, using simple measurement and basic geometry, see than earth is indeed spheroid. What ANY kind of religious book say or not about earth shape form that point is irreverent.

But those people, they set their mind intro arbitrarily believing than some specific book must somehow be the absolute truth and than just systematically deny any kind of information than goes again their already determined conclusion.

Impose any rubric onto a text external to the text and you'll arrive at a conclusion heavily influenced by the rubric, such as requiring a wooden reading of everything.

Heck just look at the rest of the same chapter! She is obliged to conclude the Earth has emotions and sings for joy. The sea and forest also sing before the LORD, and the fields also feel a jubilant emotion. Even in the verse she cited the Earth is commanded to "tremble before" the LORD. The whole chapter is full of this kind of poetic metaphor staring in verse 23. She only sees what she wants to see I guess.

@The wanderer Vanity when I tell people how to get saved?! I used to believe in JESUS and wasn't saved, one has to accept HIS ultimate sin sacrifice and believe in HIS resurrection and that HE is GOD (see John 1) , it's a process so to speak. Only believing that JESUS existed on earth isn't enough. Muslims Mormons, Jehovah's (false) Witnesses etc. believe in a different "Jesus" and aren't saved! That's why people should read the Bible.

The fact that people don't think ancient people could do something as simply as writing in metaphors and have deep meaning in their literature like today's writers is why ancient people were never properly credited for their great achievements. One problem with this reading is that the Hebrew word used for Earth (eretz) clearly only includes the dry land and does not include the ocean. So even if you take the wooden literal meaning, it still would not conflict with the planet being round since it is simply not talking about earth as in the planet. Sometimes I feel like OEC wrongly concede that the Biblical authors had an outlandish view of the universe, when I personally feel that you only get that when you cram their words into our way of thinking.

Personally I don’t think we should get so worked up that flat earthers exist. I find them rather comical. I also think we should give them a seat at the table of discourse seeing as debate is the best way for such silly claims to be debunked. People will make their decision based on who provides the more persuasive argument.

UNI - (one) VERSE-(a cycle or turning) I am a Christian, first off, so i can say for certain that this is something that you can understand given enough effort. This takes a considerable amount of mental effort and complex mental visualization. Truth can be sometimes stranger than fiction. It can be EXTREMELY difficult to understand, especially when we get into the realm of quantum physics, and its perfectly normal for most people not to be able to understand. As you begin to understand these concepts, they will amaze & enlighten you to the unimaginable beauty of Gods work. I can help you understand the points that you are struggling with. If you can believe this "flat earth" theory, that tells me you are wanting to ultimately discover the truth and that's great! So...lets start by understanding gravity. This will help you build a framework which will allow you to easily make sense of all the rest. Try to realize that there is actually no such concept as "up", all directions can be up. any place you stand on the earth will be "up" because it is relative to you. People in Africa and Central America don't live in a sideways world, obviously, so you will never feel upside down or fall off of any planet, or moon that has mass. In outer space ( the point at which the earths gravity has no effect on objects, far away, well outside the orbit of the moon) up and down cease to exist as working concepts,. We can consider the universe to be infinite because it is still expanding at the speed of light, actually still accelerating. Therefore, we could never reach the edges, and light from those places can never reach our eyes. Gravity is generated by the mass (weight) of the object (planet, star meteor, moon, etc.) Imagine spacetime like an invisible blanket. stretch it tight then put a baseball on it. Next, throw a handfull of bb's or marbles on the sheet...observe how they all are attracted to the baseball. This is the simplest explanation to understand gravity. However, in reality this blanket would stretch in every direction, we would call this structure the "matrix." So imagine a suspension like jelly that holds planets and stars in 3 dimensions, X, Y, & Z. this 3 dimensional set of directions can be rotated in any way relative to you, so theres really not an "up." the 4th dimension we consider to be "time" or entropy. So for instance, a neutron star is so dense that 1 tablespoon of it would weigh more than the whole earth. anything more dense than a neutron star would become a black hole. So imagine that the baseball on the sheet to be so heavy that it punches a hole through the sheet. This amount of gravity tears things apart into atoms. Now that we have that concept down, lets continue. When you imagine that an airplane in flight would constantly need to pitch nose down to avoid flying higher and higher rather than maintaining a constant altitude, or distance from the ground, you are not far from truth and this next part should be pretty easy to understand. The planet is MASSIVE in comparison to an airplane. Due to physics we can understand air has density. Because it has density, it forms our atmosphere instead of floating off into space. The higher up that you are from the ground, the less density the air has. The curvature of the upper portion of the wing creates a surface which takes the air longer to pass over than the bottom of the wing which is flat. This shape creates lift and allows the plane to fly. At a certain point, the air is not dense enough to carry the weight of the airplane and it cant fly any higher. Also the lack of oxygen for the engines establishes a maximum altitude for the aircraft. You will be able to understand how satellites orbit the earth with ease since we've covered what we have so far. You will be happy to know that your concept of having to pitch the plane down always in order to maintain a certain distance from the ground is ALMOST correct when applied to objects in orbit. There is a specific altitude depending on the size of the craft, at which it will be "falling". Its actually pretty simple to understand how they don't fall back to earth even though they are "falling." In orbit around the earth, the satellite would be falling at the same rate at which the earth is curving away from it, that's why it can remain in orbit. It is constantly falling, but the earth is curving away from it at the same rate so it cant fall to the ground, but orbits in a constant fall toward a curve that is matching the rate of the fall. Next we can discuss space-time dilation. This next bit is a little tricky but not too much. Imagine that you are viewing a wheel and tire of a car from the side as it spins. Notice that if you put a mark near the edge where the tire meets the ground, and another mark on a lugnut, that when spinning, the marks travel different speeds as the tire spins. the inner mark does not have to travel the distance that the outer mark does as it spins. Note also that these marks are travelling at different speeds than each other. this is due to how far they are from center. This can help you understand that satellites are travelling much more distance than an object sitting on the ground, because the object on the ground is closer to the center of the earth than the satellite above it in space. so if you put a clock on the ground and one in the satellite, after a short time you notice that the clocks are reading 2 different times when before they were synchronized. This is where it gets wild. Objects travelling at higher speeds create a warp in space-time, so the flow of time will slow down the faster we travel. The reason that we cant imagine travelling at the speed of light, is because at that speed, time would cease to flow and we would call this state "infinity" I wont go into explaining quantum states or entanglement of quantum particles, because the laws of nature as we understand them dont apply. thats why there is "physics" and then there is "quantum physics". If anyone would like help learning more, we could next discuss spin-up spin-down quantum states, and how manipulation of these states allows a quantum computer like D-Wave to carry out calculations in multiple parallel dimensions simultaneously, and exploit those extra dimensions to pull those resources back into our world. By accepting false principles that seems to make sense, fitting previously held cognitive biases & neglecting to use the incredibly powerful brain that god gave us, we are defiling Gods temple and leading his people straight to hell. I have absolutely no problem unravelling any mis-construed understanding that led someone to believe this concept... I apologize for being so harsh, but as a fairly intelligent person that also believes in God, this "Flat Earth" stuff is actually extremely ridiculous. This concept is a deception devised to strip you of your credibility & render you incapable of bringing others to the lord...Believe me when I say that most people on earth understand the basics of this but have a very difficult time explaining it in a way thats easy to understand. Pray for wisdom and STUDY. Again, you will reap what comes of what you are sewing here, so for sake of your eternal soul, don't be a tool. Demonic forces are far more intelligent & cunning than we could ever imagine, and by spreading false information, you are actually playing for goat lucy. REPENT

Comparing Earth shape to advanced field of physic is quite a proof comparison. It's very easy to understand why earth is indeed a globe....all you require there is quite basic geometry.

Granted, based on the fact earth surface, for example, is a non-Euclidean 2D space. Some of it is more complex than your average high school geometry. But still, it's quite simple and I don't see Flat Earther have any excuse there.

Now sure, understanding for example relativistic explanation for gravity is somehow a lot more complex. I mean, GR literally describe a object falling to earth as a inertial motion, a "straight line at constant speed" (only there straight line are geodetic). I mean, we speak of object falling on earth almost exclusively because time flow slower closer to earth. And well....at the end of the day it's still geometry and yea, does all add up. But now I cannot really ask for anyone to wrap their mind around how a non-Euclidean 4 dimensional space work. Let alone other theory than use even more dimension. required

It’s important for flat earthers to understand that the ancient eastern peoples had a vastly different cosmology then we have today. They truly did conceive of the earth being a flat disk and the sky being a solid dome that separates the waters above it. Although they may have believed it to be true and literal we can understand it as God giving theological truth through their ancient way of understanding the cosmos.

I love the idea and concept because you can keep reason and science and also partially subscribe to ancient cosmology and the Bible with the earth being flat, be cause perceptually, to us, it is, and God made the earth for us. Not really. In near east cosmology, the firmament is a solid dome and the flat earth is supported by pillars. The heavens trembling and the foundations shaking are the said dome and pillars being shaken by God. Not a flat earther btw.

@Joseph Woodbury III Yeah it's difficult for us. It's a figure of speech that we in this day and age where we know the earth is a globe floating in space don't really understand. But take the phrase "floating in space": it's a figure of speech as well. The earth is not literally floating in space. The ancients believed the world was held up firmly by pillars that figuratively could not be destroyed.

People who believe in flat earth today simply believe that the ancients were correct in their cosmology.

@Gospel to the Geek - I think it goes deeper than that... as human we always have this bias of trying to think of yourself as being extremely special. Guess this is one of the side effect of intelligence, not always a good one I must add as it lead to serious bias.

Lot of religion are born and shaped around this selfish desire. Just like lot of believe used to be. When there is lack of information, we just turned all the gaps in our favor in the way than make us the most comfortable about our own little existence.

But as time passed and we learned more and more about our universe....lot of this self-importance started to get striped away. What is not a bad things overall, it's a required stop in moving forward. But somehow, it also create resistance. I think FE and other fundamentalist ideology are, deep down, a cover up for those individual own existential insecurity and fear of insignificance.....

In Mark 13:14-19 it has the destruction of the Temple followed immediately by "days of distress" which then mercifully get "cut short" (v. 20). Then "in those days, following that distress" there are signs in the sky and then "At that time people will see the Son of Man coming in clouds" (v. 26). These events are all in an immediate sequence, with constant emphasis on it all happening "at that time" and immediately after the Temple's fall. Is this in your opinion evidence that Mark 13 has the final apocalypse happening just after the predicted destruction of the Temple. If so, wouldn't this indicate a failed eschatonic prophecy or was there never really an estimated time for the apocalypse? Any help would be much appreciated.

It’s a cop out, people believe science rather than the Bible. They need to make the Bible fit with the secular explanation of how life came into being. Adam and Eve were fully created on the 6th day. Life didn’t evolve from a primordial goo. To say that it’s either metaphorical or pure fantasy is ridiculous. I serve an all power God. He is more than capable of creating life exactly as the Bible suggests.

The issue is that the verse she picked does not prove the earth is flat. I'd perfectly understand if she said, "The Bible says the earth doesn't move, so it can't be turning," and then asked, "How do scientists know that it turns?" And then studied, but to use it to mean the earth is flat is not a good idea because it says nothing about the earth's shape. I do believe the world moves, I don't believe the earth is flat, I don't care what she thinks, but to use this verse to prove the earth is flat is heavily erroneous; it's like grabbing at strings and trying to save yourself from falling.

Respectfully, I don't think that is a fair assertion. The word translated as Earth is eretz and it means dry land. You can look it up in a lexicon, but it is also apparent many times in the Bible. The dry land while not flat per say does have ends and edges. As for the so called " firmament" I don't see why that can't simply be seen as the atmosphere. That Hebrew word is a little trickier, but it seems to mean "spreading" or "stretching" which conjures up the image of a cloudy sky. To say that they believed in literal "windows of heaven" would seem to suggest they didn't know about rain clouds, which are discussed in the book of Job.

You said "we" but what about "you" , I challenge "you" to definitively prove the earth is a globe without reverting to "NASA" . The easiest way to prove earth is a globe is to set up way points at sea level a mile or two out and see if it vanishes behind the earths curve...which is 8" per mile.

And that doesn't disregard it to be a non rotating plane 1 Chronicles 16:30 (not a planet)
