Mirror
-OZ- Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Saw a monster in the mirror when I woke up today
A monster in my mirror but I did not run away
I did not shed a tear or hide beneath my bed
Though the monster looked at me and this is what he said:

He said "Wubba wubba wubba wubba woo woo woo"
Wubba wubba wubba and a doodly do
He sang "Wubba wubba wubba" so I sang it too
Do not wubba me or I will wubba you
Do not wubba me or I will wubba you

Told the monster in the mirror, "No, I am not scared"
Then I smiled at him and thanked him for the song that we had shared
Well, the monster thanked me too, he smiled right back and then
The monster in the sang his song again

He said "Wubba wubba wubba wubba woo woo woo"
Wubba wubba wubba and a doodly do
He went "Wubba wubba wubba" so I sang along
Yes, wubba wubba wubba is a monster song
Wubba wubba wubba is a monster song

Wubba wubba wubba wubba woo woo woo
Wubba wubba wubba and a doodly do
He went "Wubba wubba wubba" and I sang along
Wubba wubba wubba wubba wubba wubba
Yes, wubba wubba wubba is a monster song
Wubba wubba wubba is a monster song

If your mirror has a monster in it, do not shout
This kind of situation does not call for freaking out
And do nothing that you would not like to see him do
'Cause that monster in the mirror he just might be you

Singing "Wubba wubba wubba wubba woo woo woo"
Wubba wubba wubba and a doodly do
Wubba wubba wubba you can join in too
Wubba wubba wubba wubba wubba wubba
Yes, if you wubba me then I will wubba you
If you wubba me then I will wubba you

Going wubba wubba wubba is the thing to do
Everytime you wubba us we'll wubba you

Overall Meaning

In 'MirroR', -OZ- sing about waking up and seeing a monster in their mirror, but instead of being afraid, they face it head-on. The monster speaks in a language of gibberish, which the singer repeats, forming a bond and sharing a song with the monster. The song emphasizes living in harmony and acceptance, even with the scary monsters inside us. The lyrics suggest that the monster in the mirror is a reflection of the singer's inner self, and acknowledging and embracing it is the key to acceptance and self-love.

The lyrics also suggest that there is no reason to panic or run away from things that scare us, but rather we should face them because they might turn out to be beautiful. The song is a reminder to accept and embrace all parts of ourselves, even the scary ones, as they make us complete. The message is one of positivity and hope, encouraging listeners to love and accept themselves despite their flaws or perceived imperfections.

Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers distills the themes of Kendrick Lamar’s entire discography to communicate a conclusive message to all the people he’s touched: “I choose me, I’m sorry”. This line is a direct response to the shame & guilt-fuelled questions posed with songs like “Sing About Me; Dying of Thirst”, “U”, “How Much A Dollar Cost”, “Blacker the Berry”, “Mortal Man” and more. Oklama’s 5 TDE albums have been a cohesive yet chaotic stream of consciousness, one man’s attempt to convey the story of how he saved his own life, along with friends, family and hopefully millions of fans, solely through his faith and love for music.

His endless passion for music let him overcome racial, generational and personal trauma, and gave him the success, comfort and safety that most humans want to achieve for themselves and their families.

In one sense, the song’s title “Mirror” can explain Kendrick’s ultimate gift to the world, and why he can finally be at peace with his Saviour Complex: His music could serve as a mirror for the listener, a metaphor for how each listener will be able to see themselves and thus easier understand & empathise with Kendrick’s good and bad nature. It’s also a mirror because it reflects the thoughts users already bring into it. Someone who wants to see hate or anti-white messages will find it. Someone who fears Kendrick is a transphobe or sexist will find it. Someone who wants to recover from their own sex addiction could find the answer through his Mirror. Someone who feels he’s an inspirational voice for the young generation, a rebuke of African American culture’s massive insecurities around sexual discrimination, will surely be able to also find those feelings reflected in his discography.

Mr. Morale & The Big Steppers is also an unapologetic reveal about how the mostly well-intentioned Kendrick Lamar let his saviour complex blind him to his toxic behaviour due to his own conviction that the ends (saving everyone’s souls) would justify the means (egotistic, destructive behaviour such as infidelity, robbery, gangbanging). The conclusion to his arc, the one truth that has fuelled him to be able to be a visionary artist, loving son, father, and human being, can be found in this final line he repeats throughout this song: “I choose me, I’m sorry.”

Channeling the Christian perception of Jesus’ ultimate gift to humanity being the power of forgiveness, Oklama’s apologetic & repentant “I’m sorry” is a message both to his fans, his haters, society, his family and himself, conveying that he’s already forgiven himself for all his past sins and failures to meet expectations, and praying that his peers will forgive him in the same manner.

Not only is it a conclusive line that summarises Kendrick’s own meditation on his life’s successes and failures; like “I” before it, some will absorb “I choose me, I’m sorry” as a cathartic mantra about finding peace and love within oneself. My interpretation is that the true salvation from God is the promise that your soul’s inherent goodness is all you need in order to be like Jesus Christ, and exude ultimate empowerment and love to your fellow human beings;

In conclusion, absorbing the message “I choose me, I’m sorry” may prove more positive, practical and loving than the ultimately toxic personality trait called “Saviour Complex”.

In short: For the people who are left feeling satisfied and fulfilled with his 5-album personal arc, the line “I choose me, I’m sorry” can ultimately be an inspirational, spiritual and cathartic answer to the question that has tormented humans since the dawn of time: What is the meaning of life?

[Intro: Kodak Black]
I choose me

[Verse 1: Kendrick Lamar]
The pressure's taking over me, it's beginning to loom
Better if I spare your feelings and tell you the truth
Lately, I redirected my point of view
You won't grow waitin' on me
I can't live in the Matrix, huh
Rather fall short of your graces, huh
This time I won't trade places, huh
Not about who's right, who's wrong, huh
Evolve, the only thing known, huh
Ask me when I'm coming home, huh
Blink twice again, I'm gone

[Chorus: Kendrick Lamar]
I choose me, I'm sorry
I choose me, I'm sorry
I choose me, I'm sorry
I choose me, I'm sorry
I choose me, I'm sorry
I choose me, I'm sorry

[Verse 2: Kendrick Lamar]
She woke up in the morning for the daily news
I was so low and mourning through the family feuds
Baby, I told you a story and laid down all the rules
Still, you won't grow waiting on me

[Chorus: Kendrick Lamar]
I choose me, I'm sorry
I choose me, I'm sorry
I choose me, I'm sorry
I choose me, I'm sorry
I choose me, I'm sorry
I choose me, I'm sorry

[Verse 3: Kendrick Lamar]
'Cause all of it's toxic
Girl, I'm not relevant to givin' on profit
Personal gain off my pain, it's nonsense
Darlin' my demons is off the leash for a moshpit
Baby, I just had a baby, you know she need me
Workin' on myself, the counselin' is not easy
Don't you point a finger, just to point a finger
'Cause critical thinkin' is a deal-breaker
Faith in one man is a ship sinking
Do yourself a favor and get a mirror that mirror grievance
Then point it at me so the reflection can mirror freedom
She told me that she need me the most, I didn't believe her
She even called me names on the post, the world can see it
Jokes and gaslightin'
Mad at me 'cause she didn't get my vote, she say I'm triflin'
Disregardin' the way that I cope with my own vices
Maybe it's time to break it off
Run away from the culture to follow my heart
[Bridge: Kendrick Lamar]
I realized, true love's not savin' face
But unconditional
When will you let me go?
I trust you’ll find independence
If not, then all is forgiven
Sorry I didn't save the world, my friend
I was too busy buildin' mine again

[Chorus: Kendrick Lamar]
I choose me, I'm sorry
I choose me, I'm sorry
I choose me, I'm sorry
I choose me, I'm sorry
I choose me, I'm sorry
I choose me, I'm sorry
I choose me, I'm sorry
I choose me, I'm sorry
I choose me, I'm sorry
I choose me, I'm sorry

@andrew_vzquez

Damn, I’m definitely felt torn with tears when hearing: “I choose me, I’m sorry.” My dad is a ignorant and narcissistic person to just deal with and makes a tons of problems and i had to break off our relationship because he doesn’t want me succeed for my family and makes problems to switch them onto me and make himself a victim. Tough love enough, I definitely loved my dad and i had to suck up the courage and broke off our relationship but these words meant so much more for me when hearing them overall because i know i have the power to do things and i’ll never allow anyone to tell me I can’t do because their ego is hurt.

I just want to say your words helped me along the way.

This album is definitely 10/10

Thanks Kendrick.
