I Heard It Through The Grapevine
- Creedence Clearwater Revival Lyrics

Ooo I bet you're wonderin' how I knew
'Bout your plans to make me blue
With some other guy that you knew before
Between the two of us guys
You know I loved you more
It took me by surprise I must say
When I found out yesterday
Ooo I heard it through the grapevine
Not much longer would you be mine
Ooo I heard it through the grapevine
And I'm just about to lose my mind

Honey, honey yeah

You know that a man ain't supposed to cry
But these tears I can't hold inside
Losin' you would end my life you see
'Cause you mean that much to me
You could have told me yourself
That you found someone else
Instead I heard it through the grapevine
Not much longer would you be mine
Ooo I heard it through the grapevine
And I'm just about to lose my mind

Honey, honey yeah

People say you believe half from what you see
Non non none from what you hear
I can't help being confused
If it's true won't tell me here
Do you plan to let me go
For the other guy that you knew before?

Ooo I heard it through the grapevine
Not much longer would you be mine
Ooo I heard it through the grapevine
And I'm just about to loss my mind
Honey, honey, yeah

Ooo I heard it through the grapevine,
Not much longer would you be mine
Ooo I heard it through the grapevine,
And I'm just about to lose my mind

Ooo I heard it through the grapevine,
Not much longer would you be mine

Ahh I heard it through the grapevine,
And I'm just about to lose my mind, honey honey yeah

Overall Meaning

"I Heard It Through The Grapevine" by Creedence Clearwater Revival is a song about a man who finds out through rumors, or "the grapevine," that his lover has been seeing someone else. The singer expresses his shock and sadness at this revelation, as losing his lover would be devastating to him. Despite the heartbreaking news, he still holds out hope that it might not be true and wonders why his lover didn't just tell him directly. The lyrics capture the pain of betrayal and the confusion that comes with hearing rumors about a loved one's infidelity.

The song was originally written by Norman Whitfield and Barrett Strong and was first recorded by Marvin Gaye in 1967, becoming a number-one hit for him. Creedence Clearwater Revival’s version came out in 1970 and was also a hit, reaching number 43 on the US Billboard Hot 100.

Interestingly, the bassline in CCR's version is played by Stu Cook on the Hammond B3 organ instead on the bass guitar. Also, the drumming in the song was done entirely by Doug Clifford using only his hands to hit the tom-toms, giving the song a distinctive sound.

Makes me want to grab a beer, some Marlboros, get in a truck, and travel across the USA while this is playing.

@BakerWild

It's wild that John Fogerty isn't ever included in the Top Guitarists of all time even though he plays some of the most beautiful lead and solos out there
