Barracuda
- Heart Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

So this ain't the end, I saw you again, today
I had to turn my heart away
Smiled like the sun, kisses for everyone
And tales, it never fails

You lying so low in the weeds
I bet you gonna ambush me
You'd have me down, down, down, down on my knees
Now wouldn't you, barracuda? Oh

Back over time we were all trying for free
You met the porpoise and me, uh-huh
No right, no wrong you're selling a song, a name
Whisper game

And if the real thing don't do the trick
You better make up something quick
You gonna burn, burn, burn, burn, burn to the wick
Ooh, barracuda, oh yeah

"Sell me, sell you" the porpoise said
Dive down deep now to save my head, you
I think that you got the blues too

All that night and all the next
Swam without looking back
Made for the western pools, silly, silly fools

The real thing don't do the trick, no
You better make up something quick

You gonna burn, burn, burn, burn, burn it to the wick
Ohh, barra-barracuda, yeah

Overall Meaning

The song "Barracuda" by the rock band Heart was released in 1977, off their second album "Little Queen". The song starts with the singer saying that she has met someone again, but she had to turn her heart away. The person smiled and was friendly to everyone, but the singer knows that the person is lying low in the weeds and waiting to ambush her. She knows that the person wants to bring her down on her knees. The chorus is a taunt to this person, calling them a barracuda and saying that they will not succeed in dragging her down.

The second part of the song talks about the music industry and how it can be cutthroat. The singer references meeting a porpoise (which may be a metaphor for someone who is innocent and naive) and together they encountered someone who is selling a song and a name. They play the whisper game, where rumors and gossip spread quickly. The singer warns that if the real thing (meaning genuine talent or hard work) doesn't work, then you have to make something up quick. The last verse talks about the porpoise and the singer swimming without looking back, but foolishly heading towards their downfall.

Overall, "Barracuda" is a song about being wary of people who are not genuine, and the competitive nature of the music industry. The barracuda, with its sharp teeth and predatory nature, is a perfect metaphor for these types of people.
