Nights In White Satin
- Moody Blues Lyrics

Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴  Line by Line Meaning ↴

Nights in white satin
Never reaching the end
Letters I've written
Never meaning to send

Beauty I'd always missed
With these eyes before
Just what the truth is
I can't say any more

'Cause I love you
Yes I love you
Oh how I love you

Gazing at people, some hand in hand
Just what I'm going through they can't understand
Some try to tell me, thoughts they cannot defend
Just what you want to be, you will be in the end

And I love you
Yes I love you
Oh how I love you
Oh how I love you

Nights in white satin
Never reaching the end
Letters I've written
Never meaning to send

Beauty I've always missed
With these eyes before
Just what the truth is
I can't say any more

'Cause I love you
Yes I love you
Oh how I love you
Oh how I love you
'Cause I love you
Yes I love you

Oh how I love you
Oh how I love you

Overall Meaning

The song "Nights in White Satin" by the Moody Blues tells a story of unrequited love and the confusion that comes with it. The singer is writing letters to their beloved, never meaning to send them, expressing their true feelings that they are unable to articulate in person. The first verse sets the mood with the image of nights in white satin, which refers to the rich and luxurious fabric that symbolizes both the passion and the purity of love. The singer is lost in their own thoughts, trying to understand their feelings and the truth behind them, but they are unable to find the words to express it to their beloved.

The second verse reflects the singer's feelings of isolation and being misunderstood. They see couples around them, holding hands and seemingly happy, but they cannot help but feel separated from them because of their unrequited love. Some try to give them advice, but it is useless as they do not understand the depth of the singer's emotions. The bridge brings the focus back to the singer's love and the intensity of their feelings, which they cannot keep hidden any longer.

The final verse repeats the themes of the first, with the singer admitting they cannot express the truth of their love and the confusion it brings. They also repeat their avowal of love, with a sense of both vulnerability and determination. The song ends on a resolved note, with the singer acknowledging their love, even though the object of their affection may never understand it.

I'm 70 years old now and this song still overwhelms me with emotion. I always get goosebumps and will always remember the joys of playing the album over and over and over and over..... It was one of the first exposures to orchestral music for me back then. "Band member Justin Hayward wrote and composed the song at age 19 while touring in Belgium and titled the song after a girlfriend gave him a gift of satin bedsheets. The song itself was a tale of a yearning love from afar, which leads many aficionados to term it as a tale of unrequited love endured by Hayward."

Breathe deep the gathering gloom
Watch lights fade from every room
Bed sitter people look back and lament
Another days useless energy spent
Impassioned lovers wrestle as one
Lonely man cries for love and has none
New mother picks up and suckles her son
Senior citizens wish they were young
Cold hearted orb that rules the night
Removes the colors from our sight
Red is gray and yellow white
But we decide which is right
And which is an illusion

I was and still there. Unlike today's so-called music, you can hear the words, you can feel the words, you can be there... Carry on young folks, carry on.
