Mother's Little Helper
- The Rolling Stones Lyrics

What a drag it is getting old

"Kids are different today"
I hear ev'ry mother say
Mother needs something today to calm her down
And though she's not really ill
There's a little yellow pill
She goes running for the shelter of a mother's little helper
And it helps her on her way, gets her through her busy day

"Things are different today"
I hear ev'ry mother say
Cooking fresh food for a husband's just a drag
So she buys an instant cake and she burns her frozen steak
And goes running for the shelter of a mother's little helper
And two help her on her way, get her through her busy day

Doctor please, some more of these
Outside the door, she took four more
What a drag it is getting old

"Men just aren't the same today"
I hear ev'ry mother say
They just don't appreciate that you get tired
They're so hard to satisfy, You can tranquilize your mind
So go running for the shelter of a mother's little helper
And four help you through the night, help to minimize your plight

Doctor please, some more of these
Outside the door, she took four more
What a drag it is getting old

"Life's just much too hard today"
I hear ev'ry mother say
The pursuit of happiness just seems a bore
And if you take more of those, you will get an overdose

No more running for the shelter of a mother's little helper
They just helped you on your way, through your busy dying day

Overall Meaning

The Rolling Stones’ song Mother's Little Helper is a commentary on the societal pressures of being a housewife in the 1960s and the use of prescription drugs as a coping mechanism. The first verse talks about how getting older is "a drag" and how mothers would use prescription pills to "calm her down" even when they were not necessarily sick. The little yellow pill that the lyrics mention is likely a reference to the prescription drug Valium, which was commonly prescribed to women in the 1960s to help them deal with stress or anxiety. The line "get her through her busy day" is an indication of how much pressure women were under to manage the household and take care of the children.

The second verse talks about how mothers are expected to cook fresh food for their husbands, which is seen as a hassle, so they opt for instant cake and frozen steaks. The song then talks about how men don't appreciate how hard it is to be a wife and mother, and how they are difficult to satisfy. The “tranquilize your mind” line is once again a reference to Valium as the drug being used by mothers to deal with their unappreciative husbands. The chorus repeats the same effect of the drug, which is to provide a temporary escape from their hectic lives.

The final verse sees the mother despairing about life and how it is "too hard." And if they take too many pills, they may overdose and die. The song is essentially a social commentary, addressing the unreal expectations that women had to face in the 1960s and how they were turning to prescription drugs to deal with them.

I was positioning a large, heavy, and stubborn rug in my office as I was listening to the Stones. Bent at the waist, I tugged hard on the corner of the rug and suddenly pain shot through my lower back, just as Mick sings "What a drag it is getting old." You didn't have to hit it quite so hard on the head there, Mr. Jagger.
