Get Up Stand Up
. Bob Marley & The Wailers Lyrics

Ey, get up, stand up, stand up for your rights!
Get up, stand up, don't give up the fight!
Get up, stand up, stand up for your rights!
Get up, stand up, don't give up the fight!

Preacher man, don't tell me
Heaven is under the earth
I know you don't know
What life is really worth
It's not all that glitters is gold
Half the story has never been told
And now you see the light
You stand up for your rights

Get up, stand up, stand up for your rights!
Get up, stand up, don't give up the fight!
Get up, stand up, stand up for your rights!
Get up, stand up, don't give up the fight!

You see, most people think
Great God will come from the sky
Take away everything
And make everybody feel high
But if you know what life is worth
You would look for yours on earth
And now you see the light
You stand up for your rights

Get up, stand up, stand up for your rights!
Get up, stand up, don't give up the fight!
Get up, stand up, stand up for your rights!
Get up, stand up, don't give up the fight!

We sick an' tired of your 'ism-schism game
Dyin', goin' to heaven in-a Jesus' name, Lord
We know when we understand
Almighty God is a living man
You can fool some people sometimes
But you couldn't fool all the people all the time
And now we see the light
You stand up for your rights!

Get up, stand up, stand up for your rights!
Get up, stand up, don't give up the fight!
Get up, stand up, stand up for your rights!
Get up, stand up, don't give up the fight!
Don't give up the fight
Don't give up the fight
Don't give up the fight
Don't give up the fight
Don't give up the fight
Don't give up the fight
Don't give up the fight
Don't give up the fight

Don't give up the fight
Don't give up the fight
Don't give up the fight
Don't give up the fight

I say now (don't give up the fight) whooa-oh, ooh-oh
Whooa-oh, ooh-oh
Whooa-oh, ooh-oh
Whooa-oh, ooh-oh

Oh, yo-yo-yo (oh, yo-yo-yo)
Oh, yo-yo-yo (oh, yo-yo-yo)
Oh, yo (oh, yo)
Oh, yo (oh, yo)
Oh, yo-yo-yo (oh, yo-yo-yo)
Oh, yo-yo-yo (oh, yo-yo-yo)
Ethiopia (Ethiopia)
Yo-o (yo-o)
Yo, Jah-Jah (yo Jah-Jah)
Yo-o (yo-o)
Yo, Jah-Jah (yo Jah-Jah)
So we won't give up the fight
So we won't give up the fight
So we won't give up the fight
So we won't give up the fight
So we won't give up the fight
So we won't give up the fight
So we won't give up the fight
So we won't give up the fight
I said now, whoa-a (whoa-a)
Whoa-a (whoa-a)
Oh, yo-yo-yo (oh, yo-yo-yo)
Oh, yo-yo-yo (oh, yo-yo-yo)
So we won't give up the fight
So we won't give up the fight
So we won't give up the fight
So we won't give up the fight

You see, most people think
Great God will come from the sky
Take away everything
Make everybody feel high
But if you know what life is worth
You would look for yours on earth
And now you see the light
You stand up for your rights

Oh, yo (oh, yo)
Oh, yo-yo-yo (oh, yo-yo-yo)
Oh, yo (oh, yo)
Oh, yo-yo-yo (oh, yo-yo-yo)

Stand up for your rights!
Stand up for your rights!
Stand up for your rights!
Stand up for your rights!
Stand up for your rights!
Stand up for your rights!
Stand up for your rights!
Stand up for your rights!
Stand up for your rights!

Stand up for your rights!
Stand up for your rights!

Overall Meaning

The lyrics of "Get Up Stand Up" by Bob Marley & The Wailers call for people to fight for their rights and not let anyone take them away. The song begins with an urgent plea to "get up, stand up" and continue fighting for one's rights. Marley then challenges religious leaders who preach that heaven is the ultimate destination and that everything on earth is temporary. Instead, Marley emphasizes that knowing one's true worth comes from seeking out and fighting for one's rights in this world, and not to wait for any celestial reward. Finally, Marley calls out those who try to use religion to manipulate and control people, urging listeners to stand up and fight for their rights.

Overall, the song is a powerful reminder of the importance of activism and standing up for oneself in the face of oppressive systems. Its message is particularly resonant given Marley's own experiences growing up in poverty and facing institutional racism and oppression in Jamaica. By encouraging listeners to stand up for themselves and fight back against injustice, "Get Up Stand Up" is a timeless call to action.

For much of the time, Bob sang with his eyes closed, which showed to me that he wasn't singing to boost his ego with audience adulation, he was writing and singing his words with absolute deep sincerity and genuine emotion. Jah bless him.
