Let's stay together

I, I'm I'm so in love with you
Whatever you want to do
Is all right with me
'Cause you make me feel so brand new
And I want to spend my life with you
Let me say that since, baby, since we've been together
Ooh, loving you forever
Is what I need
Let me, be the one you come running to
I'll never be untrue

Oh baby
Let's, let's stay together ('gether)
Lovin' you whether, whether
Times are good or bad, happy or sad
Oh, oh, oh, oh, yeah
Whether times are good or bad, happy or sad

Why, somebody, why people break up?
Oh, then turn around and make up
I just can't see
You'd never do that to me (would you, baby?)
Just being around you is all I see
Here's what I want us do

Let's, we oughta stay together ('gether)
Loving you whether, whether
Times are good or bad, happy or sad
Come on

Let's, woo (let's stay together) let's stay together
Loving you whether, whether times are good or bad

Overall Meaning

In "Let's Stay Together," Al Green professes his love and commitment for his partner by declaring that he will stick with them through thick and thin. The song opens with Green declaring his love for his partner and expressing his willingness to go along with anything that they want to do. He also tells them that they make him feel like a new person and that he wants to spend the rest of his life with them. In the chorus, Green reminds his partner that he will always love them and stay by their side, no matter what happens.

Green goes on to ask a question that has puzzled people for generations: why do people break up and then make up? He explains that he just couldn't bear the thought of losing his partner, and that being around them is all he needs to be happy. He then suggests that he and his partner should "stay together" and love each other no matter what obstacles come their way.

In essence, "Let's Stay Together" is a song about the power of love and the importance of commitment in a relationship. It has become an enduring classic because of its heartfelt lyrics and Green's silky smooth vocals.

No background vocalists to harmonize or help correct pitch, just a man with a band behind him whose sole purpose right here is to accentuate and amplify his voice. Completely alone and open to all of the imperfections of a live performance and he fucking nailed it. This is one of the most impressive live vocal performances I’ve ever seen.
