We Are Not Alone
1.8.7. Lyrics
Jump to: Overall Meaning ↴ Line by Line Meaning ↴
when we were almost exclusively hanging out
together with friends,
Cathy and I went to St. John's Applefest
It was held every fall in the parking lot of the Catholic church
I had attended as a youth,
converting the quarter-mile of parish grounds into a second-rate carnival
We meandered through the crowds
like tourists,
eventually ending up at the pirate ship at the far end of the fair
(A mechanical boat that rose into the sky,
then swooped back down in the other direction like a swallow diving for insects)
Cathy was nervous and began to fidget, refusing to get in line
before our friends and I talked her into going
When the ride started,
any romantic idea I had of holding hands or an embrace
was quickly abandoned when I saw the white-knuckled grip on the safety rail
like she feared for her life
The lyrics of 1.8.7.’s song We Are Not Alone describe a personal memory from the singer’s past that is associated with his relationship with Cathy. They describe a moment from the infancy of their relationship when they were still hanging out together with friends. The singer and Cathy go to St. John's Applefest, which used to be held every fall in the parking lot of a Catholic Church, where the singer used to attend as a youth. The festival was a cheap carnival with poorly-maintained rides and inexpensive thrills.
As they navigated through the crowds, they eventually ended up at the pirate ship – a mechanical boat that offered a thrilling, swooping ride to its passengers. Although Cathy was nervous and hesitant to get in line, their friends and the singer convinced her to try it out. During the ride, the romantic notions the singer had of holding hands with Cathy evaporated when he realized how nervous she was. Instead of being able to embrace her or hold her close, he saw how tightly she gripped the safety rail, causing him to worry for her safety.
Overall, the lyrics convey the early, tentative days of the singer’s relationship with Cathy. They are trying new things together and getting to know each other, but this experience is still new and somewhat uncomfortable for both of them. The imagery and descriptions of the carnival, mixed with the nervous energy between the two characters, create a sense of unease and uncertainty that reflects the early days of any relationship.

@VYD239 The fact that things aren't lining up as you expect is a sign that a boatload of micro-editing went into this, takes a lot of technical skill to do accomplish what she's done here.

I for 1 am disguruntled at the lack of production Chopping up tracks really grinds my gears. The thing about it is its a style that is its own. Thats what labels are for. Your own artistical expression. W/O that there would be no progression.

It's not meant to be a rip off. It's more of a tip of the hat, or a nod to the original, and 1.8.7. just took it in a direction he/she felt it should go.
